EDIT: update
Dell will not budge, they are sticking to their guns, I have sent off an email to some upper management and they have told me that the poilicy will not be bent. I am considering complaining to the BBB.

Think again when buying from dell.

I am a little pissed off right now.

See my dell laptop has just died... 3 days after the warranty expired. Upon further investigation around the web i have discovered that this problem is not an isolated incident

See i own a Dell inspiron 1150. A computer known for having a defect on the mother board. So I phone up dell to have it fixed. They are giving me ******** answers and such. I looked on ebay and the new mother board is going to cost about $400. Considering I paid $1000 for this laptop I am mighty pissed off.

Dell knowingly sells laptops with design flaws and just passes the buck on to consumers. Having worked in a call center before I know that it costs anywhere between $5 to $15 per call from a customer. Therefore, I am making several calls a day telling them that if they don't fix my computer under warranty that I will continue calling 3 times a day every day. Moreover, I have the extension of a few higher managers at dell, and I will be phoning them, repeatedly until they fix my computer.

This is ********, and I urge anyone who is considering a dell laptop to think again.

Call the Service Managers or Personal Assistant of the Director of Sales and Service. Don't waste your time complaining to front line staff. Things get done when you keep your cool, are polite and stand firm talking to the 'higher ups.' They are the ones that have the power to actually help you.

I wouldn't call 3 times a day, that's just harrasement. You need to make a few 'SMART' calls to the right people is all. Good Luck! I'm sure you can get this taken care of with the results you want.

complain to the CEO.

My brother did that and dell's rep called back on the next day. My borther had a desktop and had tech issue 3 weeks before warranty expires. Called Dell CS and the CS promise to call back to arrange repairs. But the CS never call back and my brother kept on calling as he knew the warranty was going to expired. Of course, every CS he talked to just said that Dell will look into the issue and got back to him. So my brother email the CEO and honestly laid out the issue. One of the manager from Dell called him back on the next day and get the problem resolved.

good luck!

Michael Dell, or simply Mr. Dell.

YOu may find what you're looking for somewhere buried in here:

they give every accountant a dell1150.. probably better one now. They have a special contract with them, employees also get 5% off from PWC

Cingular also contracts with dell, so there are just many companies.

No, he should not tell everyone not to buy dell just because of his case. He's just overreacting.

Yeah I agree, Dells I've used have had zero issues. These incidents are not common I think.

You are overreacting. This can't be that common of a problem, because many divisions of the federal government (including Correctional facilities) use Dells (including laptops) and they work just fine. We never have trouble with the Dell's where I work.

I also know many people who own Dells and they love them, no trouble at all. I also worked at a Dell call center and I don't know of any common problem like this.

I personally like Dell computers and I recommend them to most people.

1150 that's really crummy. But well it's accounting you don't need too much to use ACCPac or simply etc.

5% off is standard epp agreement.

Maybe since they sold off their business solutions department...

Agreed, after lugging my desktop around from house to house, lugging it down the highway between Ottawa/UW/London and leaving it on for WEEKS at a time with little more than a restart occasionally, i hope Intel can pull up their socks in terms of PC game performance so that my next computer can be a dell. Oddly enough we made the change quite a few years ago when my P133 gave many issues and never looked back, in fact the XPS550 that we bought many years ago has always seen hours upon hours of use each day from my sister. Never had a single hardware issue.

Years ago, Dells used t obe top notch computers with excellent customer service but like with all companies...it's declining as they've gotten more market share. I have an older Dell laptop at 600mHz...never had a problem with it and it still functions. I've just heard horror stories with the newer ones that's why I didn't go for a Dell when I got a new laptop. I went with Fujitsu ;)

i've owned an 1150 in the past, and never had this problem, however i did notice it did get hot at times and the fan was really loud but it never got to the point where it would fry the motherboard

besides that, it ran flawlessly even after the warranty period

i jus didnt' like the vid car had shared ram on all dells

because techies actually rent spaces to do the call service. my friend has a callcenter and companies pay him such and such amounts for his service.

in the end, dell's like any other company, they EXPECT x number of laptops to fail, and put a number on how many will be fixed under warranty... or how many will fail just beyond expiry date..

I wouldnt know how they are in terms of leniency towards out of warranty replacements/repairs of known problems, but my bro had his dell laptop's LCD replaced couple of times without too much trouble... it was about 'HAPPY FACE' LCD (known issue) on 300Ms

If you bought it with a credit card, then there's a good chance that you've got extened warranty protection.

BTW, I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 that will hit it's 4th birthday next month, still going strong.

Got an 1150 myself, been going strong for two years now. I did sense it was running a little hot so installed a program, I8KFANGUI which allows you to set the temperature the fan kicks in and what speeds it should run. Heat problems no more. Did have one slight problem with mine though, one of the rubber feet on the bottom peeled off :( But if that's my biggest complaint, I'm a happy camper!

that's what you get when you buy dell.

their R&D is miniscual compared to the giants like HP, IBM. They innovate by selling their products and update as necessary to rush new product offers asap.

Buying the division doesn't mean hardware would be cheap either. They operate as seperate entities anyway.

I know Deloitte HK use Dells for the juniors and IBM X series for the seniors.

Another case in point: Fujitsu doesn't use their own notebook hard drives for their notebooks - they use Toshiba's.

Extended credit card warranties don't cover computers or computer accessories.. at least the PC mastercard doesn't.

it's not cheap but there's usually backend deals. Samsung gifted Dell, and forune quoted Micheal as saying he's carrying around a Samsung laptop. I doubt no one in PWC was gifted an IBM or bought one in the backend deal :p

Point proven :)

Accountant which are .. espiecally juniors. well lower tier jobs would likely be all Delled but that doens't mean the entire company is delled out. Quality for top management is importnat :)

Pc mastercard kind of sucks then. VISA definetely covers comps
