Canadians taking part in Iraqi insurgency: CSIS head
http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/10/20/insurgency051020.html

The head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) says Canadians have joined the insurgency in Iraq.

James Judd, the director of CSIS, revealed Thursday evening that some of the foreign fighters in Iraq battling coalition troops are Canadians. He said there aren't many, but more are expected to join.

Speaking to reporters at a break during a security conference in Montreal, Judd was asked if Canadians were in Iraq fighting against the American-led coalition. "Yes, I believe so," he said.

He said there weren't many, "we're talking single digit numbers." But he said "we're aware of several others who are contemplating leaving."

When asked if CSIS, or the government, could do anything to prevent people from joining the insurgency Judd said he didn't think there was anything legally that could be done.

"In some instances we found out about it after the fact, and to the extent that we did have some certainty about it we would want to advise our friends and allies," said the CSIS director.

According to Keith Boag, the CBC's Ottawa bureau chief, the Prime Minister's Office was "flabbergasted" that such sensitive information could be released by the head of the spy agency. "They didn't know it was being spoken about publicly and for that they [the PMO] are very angry."

"The prime minister never comments on intelligence matters and they were under the impression that CSIS didn't either," said Boag.

Acknowledgment that Canadians are fighting in Iraq raises a number of questions, such as what will their status be if they decide to return to Canada.

"It raises the longer-term question of what do they bode for the future?" Judd said.

If we were talking about an entire battalion or something, that would be shocking. But single digit numbers? Gee, what a surprise that there are sympathisers in the Canadian army....I wonder how many times more there are in the US army?

Actually, if you read the article it also says...

" He said there weren't many, "we're talking single digit numbers."

So, anywhere from 2 / 3 to a max of 9 Canadians involved .....this certainly doesn't seem to be widespread and it remains unclear whether these Canadians were directly involved in the killing of any Americans.

In fact, I don't see the word ' kill ' or ' killing ' anywhere in the article, though i do see ' fighting ' noted - perhaps the Canadians are just harrassing/ impeding and/or wounding coalition troops - it's unclear from reading the article.

A handful of Canadians have joined the insurgency... WHOOO-FRIKKIN-PPEEEE!

We're not talking Canadian Forces turning their backs on duty. We're talking less than 10 individuals joining the "rebellion". Some would call this rebellion a civil defence force. I mean really... is GWBush there just so he can get that warm and fuzzy feeling of making Iraq a better place at the end of the day? Ya... sure... and Bush was one of the first people handing out aid after the hurricanes in Louisiana and Texas. Rrrrrrright. It has nothing to do with domestic reliance on oil and 100% botched foreign policy. Nope. Not at all.

Are these relatives ' pro ' or ' anti ' Saddam ?

The Americans should be held accountable.

As well, I wish the ' anti ' American insurgents would stop targetting the poor Iraqui civilians and focus their attention on killing the the Americans instead.

A prime example, as recent as October 11th a suicide car bomb exploded at about 11 a.m. in a crowded open market in the northwestern town of Tal Afar, killing 30 Iraqis and wounding 45. All the victims appeared to be civilians -since no Iraqi or U.S. forces were in the center of Tal Afar ( 260 miles northwest of Baghdad) at all ...I mean why would the insurgents bomb a market full of civilians ?????

Canada's Apology for Oppression and Abuse of Indians Is Not Enough

TORONTO (January 8, 1998 10:24 a.m. EST http://www.nando.net) --
Canada's apology to its native peoples for past acts of oppression and
decades of abuse is too vague on financial commitments and too limited
in its reach, some Indian and Inuit leaders insist. Wednesday's
apology -- sought for years by native leaders -- was part of a
sweeping federal initiative to improve strained relations with Indian
and Inuit communities.

"Our people are not going to be satisfied with the response we've
had," said Gerald Morin, president of the Metis National Council.

Hundreds of former pupils at federally funded boarding schools have
told investigators of rapes, beatings, suicides, suspicious deaths and
humiliating punishments. The schools were aimed at severing native
youths from their own culture and assimilating them in white society.

The government pledged $245 million to fund counseling and treatment
programs for victims of abuse at the schools. While some native
leaders welcomed the unprecedented overture, many said more action was
needed.

Canada's aboriginal population is about 810,000, including Indians;
38,000 Inuits, formerly known as Eskimos; and 139,000 Metis -- people
of mixed Indian and white ancestry.

Morin said the initiative "offers very little" to the Metis,
especially because it still excludes them from filing land claims that
could lead to self-government.

Harry Daniels, president of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, said
the initiative short on funding and too focused on what happened at
the schools.

Some leaders also found the statement much weaker than the apology
former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney gave to Japanese interned in
Canada during World War II.

The head of the national assembly of Indian chiefs, however, hailed
the initiative as a historic opportunity.

"For the first time, the government has accepted us as full partners,"
said Phil Fontaine, grand chief of the Assembly of First Nations,
though cautioning there was more work to be done on building
self-reliant native communities.

A 1996 report by a government-appointed commission on Canada's
aboriginals urged the government to allocate billions of dollars to
improve the economic and political status of aboriginals.

The commission said a major change in government attitude was needed
to avoid a worsening of current problems, including a 25 percent
native jobless rate, street gangs, pervasive substance abuse, family
violence, high rates of teen suicide and poverty.

Morin said the statement and the government response to the commission
were inadequate compared with the panel's recommendations, such as
setting up an aboriginal parliament.

Indian Affairs Minister Jane Stewart has promised additional funds to
improve life on reservations, including programs for health care,
youth employment and career development.

"Sadly, our history with respect to the treatment of aboriginal people
is not something in which we can take pride," Stewart said. "We must
ensure that the mistakes which marked our past relationship are not
repeated."

How illegal ? Saddam invaded Kuwait. Threaten Saudi Arabia and neighbouring states.

This ' legality ' of the invasion is still a matter of debate.

I am not of a supporter of Saddam or his regime...bu,t I'm more concerned on the impact his invasion has had on the Iraqi people.

The US invasion of Iraq was an clearly an unprovoked assault - even though Iraq breached international law. Under Article 2, Number 4 of the UN Charter, "All Members shall refrain... from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state..." This is known as the "Prohibition of Aggression."

Secretary-General of the United Nations, and former Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, as well as several nations, say that the attack violated international law as a war of aggression since it lacked the validity of a U.N. Security Council resolution to authorize military force, and was not an act of defence, and so violated the UN charter.

I suppose it gets down to ..." Who do you believe " ? ".....

The U.N....or...the U.S. ?
