this christmas im doing some shoeboxes loaded with some gifts for little kids in 3rd world countries and get it to them thru some organizations
my gf knows the details, im just gonna fill up my boxes and donate some money to red cross for the pakistani children in the quake area as well

I work with a guy who moved here from the Middle-East.

Conversationally one day I asked him if hes ever had a dog or cat for a pet.

He told me that where hes from people dont have pets or anything like here. Main things you worry about are:

1 - What you will eat that day
2 - Where you will sleep that night

It is an interesting site, but, to be the "devil's advocate" I am pretty sure it doesn't really take into account "standard of living". I mean, you can make 12,000 a year here and be poor, but, in certain third world countries you would be very wealthy because the dollar is worth a lot more there.

But, it works the other way around too. Like, if you live someone else and are making 12,000 a year you could be considered rich because that 12,000 would buy you a mansion....

Maybe the number aren't exact, but , you probably get the idea...

I am not saying this is an excuse to ignore poverty.. Because, I definitely think North American's in general are VERY well off.. but, at the same time, the site is using statistics a bit irresponsibly I think.

I think your stats are out of date...that article to CNN is from 2004. According to Forbes.com, Gates is still the richest man in the world. ;)
