*** WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN? ***
....Soda get its fizz from a gas known as carbon dioxide. When the carbon dioxide is pumped into the soda, water molecules cling to the gas and create tiny bubbles of gas in the liquid. The force holding the gas inside the water is known as surface tension.
.....It takes a lot of energy to break the surface tension inside soda, but most of you have probably done this by dropping a can and opening it shortly afterwards.
.....Mentos contains a chemical known as ARABIC GUM (this is the ingredient that makes the mint "chewy"). This ingredient causes the surface tension of the water molecules to break even more easily, releasing more carbon dioxide gas at an astounding rate!
.....The gas causes pressure to rapidly build inside the bottle which thrusts the soda upwards in a wonderful fountain-like BLAST!
.....As most know, like a melting popsicle, melted sugar is VERY STICKY! Try to use DIET soda (or any other carbonated beverage that does NOT contain sugar), otherwise you'll be running for the shower!

I'll try it at the ol' Staples tomorrow, in the lunchroom. We sell both Coke and Mentos there.

BTW, if I use Soda Water, would it be less sticky/mess? it should have the same effect (just less sugar) unless they put less CO2 in it...

yup I've done/seen this done may times before for work...great science experiment for kids.
Use diet soda as it's less sticky. I find that diet coke works the best out of all the pop we have used. It's hard to drop them all in at the same time, so make sure you have them lined up before you drop them in because you only have about 0.5 of a second to get them all in there before it shoots up. 3 or 4 mentos is sufficient and a 2L pop shoots up from the height of a table to the roof (therefore you should do this outside).
Wintergreen lifesavers also work. A cool effect (although I've never done it before) is to use soda water and black lights (as it glows)
Oh and if you're wondering what the effect of chugging a small bottle of pop and swallowing mentos is.....well it's quite funny. You feel like you're going to puke and you burp lots...and usually one very big long burb that makes the coolest sound in your windpipe. I didn't do it, but a friend did. LOL

have u guys ever tried water and dry ice? drop a huge chunk into a bottle of water.. seal it and shake it until it explodes lol.. i tried it before in high school.. it made a round water bottle to a square lol.. but i had to throw it out coz i got scared.. but i saw a video where some dude was holding it and it exploded and he cut himself pretty bad :s
but the mentos and coke is pretty aweseome!
OH man this is so cool!

probably nothing. These bottles are made to hold extreme pressure...no extra pressure is release/created (i.e. unlike dry ice...which makes a huge bang / can shoot across almost a field almost taking off the head of friend...), therefore the bottle should hold.

I've done this before -- it's amusing to see the faces of people oggling a 6 foot geyser of sugary "goodness". You could try putting a stopper [with a hole] to the top. It shoots up faster, higher, and harder. =D
Also, the chugging coke and eating mentos... why didn't I think of that... hahahahahhaa...

The Menthos you get in the roll doesn't work as well as the Menthos you get in the little box.
As for the dry ice...this is a damn dangerous activity at best. I know of a guy who was shaking one of them up and didnt toss it away quick enough...result: Broken fingers and multiple lacerations

That's surely the best of the mentodietcoke film genre - although, the one where the girl mixes them in her stomach is fun, too - it's called Super Burp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMHTkohE1QU&search=mentos%20girl).

Definetly, not at Staples near the desktop computers or else you'll be wiping those things off the whole day. Good thing my manager didn't find out... the carpeted fixtures are still sticky to this day.

The super burp scared me!
Then I burst into laughter when I realised it cant possible be true.
Anyways, I've tried it twice today, both times with ****** results (only like 2 foot fountain!)
I've tried with both flavours and regular mint mentos, and with the mint mento's I got about 60-70% of the package in the bottle. I cant decide what I'm doing wrong. Perhaps discount brand soda is the problem?

Hey corrupt did you try diet coke? That stuff goes really far, and try it w/ the fruit flavoured mentos, not the mint.

Jun 9th, 2006, 06:47 PM
Will do.
I tried with fruit mento's and canada dry club soda, and I got like 1 foot fountain (the bottle was kinda flat already though)
Then I tried with mint mento's and no-name brand diet coke.
Next I'm gonna make it like in the video's with the cap on and just drill a hole.
that_staples_guy
Jun 9th, 2006, 06:50 PM
Yeah it differs from drink to drink, I only added fruit mentos to regular coke for flavour but I underestimated diet coke the first time i tried it. That's why a few display computers and keyboards at work got soaked in diet coke fizz.

The science in it....
Mentos acts as a catalyst... to the CO2 (l) --> CO2(g)
so by adding the mentos...
less activation energy is required to make the CO2 a gas...
thus making a geiser like explosion from the pop.
:D

What if somehow u managed to empty a bit of the bottle, and somehow tie the mentoes to the bottom of the bottle cap, screw it in, and then release the mentos into the coke...would it explode?

Thing is, the reaction will occur before you close the bottle, so you'd have to focus and do it reeaaal fast.

Sounds like a very well thought out and reasonable procedure to attempt this experiment - tell us what happens.

for those trying without good results, it has to be a new bottle of pop, unopened before the experiment, also the pop has to be at or above room tempertature. We did this in highschool in chemistry class, left a huge cola stain on the ceiling.

why?

Cuz it was cherry coke, even regular coke won't give you the same big reaction as diet.

But that guy on the show said he used diet coke JUST BECAUSE it'd be less messier, nothing else.

Jun 17th, 2006, 05:54 PM
Dropping a single menthos tablet will not give enough of a reaction anyway...the point to be made here is that the explosive nature is encouraged by multiple tablets all disrupting the carbonated water to expand out of the spout....not just the reaction of one tablet but many tablets.

Well I'm tellin ya from experience, I've been doing this w/ mentos for a long time to add flavour to coke, I drop a few mentos in and close the cap of a regular coke, let the gas out little by little and drink.
I tried it on diet coke thinking that I'd get the same reaction, as I mentioned before, it resulted to a unexpected larger reaction and drenched a few display computers and keyboards.
My coworker told me that the amount of chemicals in diet coke is higher resulting in a bigger reaction.

Furthermore, make sure it's freshly opened pop -- the more 'bubbles' you have, the better.
Drop about 8 or 10 in at the same time [slide it down a paper 'chute', and watch it blow.
