that's not bad, even considering Sauge gas are at 90.9 now (so 89 gas is at least 96.9 and gold even more)

No it is because the overall demand has decreased because drivers are not driving and buying as much as before because of the high fuel prices. Simple economics demand goes down therefore prices go down because of higher supply.
On a side note, belive me, there will be no pressure from government to lower prices. Higher fuel prices = more tax money in the government's pocket

isn't the tax fixed? something like 10 cents a litre? not a percentage of the selling price.
and dont they get less tax revenue when fewer people buy gas and thus fewer to pay the stupid tax

This is basically correct, iirc GST is the only tax that is based on the current price of fuel. Of course Oil Companies want people to think that a large portion of the price is tax, but in reality its not (anymore).

Partially correct, but really you think it's b/c of people not buying gas? Take a look at the stock markets and the price of oil, yes there is some surplus and higher production driving down the price of oil. The hurricanes have subsided easing worries. Also the energy sector was due for a correction which was reflected this week in the TSX. You can always predict the price of gas going up or down based on the price of a barrel of oil. Something for you non-financial ppl out there.

Why are gas stations running out of gas if demand has decreased?
We should all be happy prices aren't increasing from gas stations are running short on supply.

Christ we are all getting screwed no matter how we look at it ....look at the profits the energy companies are making.....wait till the bankruptcy numbers from consumers start rolling in next year and 2007 and the housing market crumbles. The auto sector is a perfect indicator.Anyhow a little off topic.

They (BIG OIL) have to tread a fine line between gouging and not pissing us too much that demand tanks (i.e. we get smart and stop buying (H1, H2, H3, Escalades etc.)

I have to agree that personal gas consumption has probably dropped. At one point during the summer gas had reached a price of 100% vs a year ago.Now budget in your monthy gas consumption and then within a year you have it doubled people will search for alternatives.Buy ecoconical cars switch to propane, ng conversions or diesel cars(volkswagon is making a killin). If you check the federeal gov't energy web page i remember there was a grant you could apply for if you switch to an alternative fuel like propane or ng to help cover the cost(vehicles 2002 or newer). Opec has recieved nothing but negative press especially from the US its biggest supporter during pre-iraq days and now refers to them as a cartel(in a negative way).People are using mass transit more etc. Then again when u think that in the last 30 years we lost 30% of our arctic perhaps we need this in a big way.Now if only we could get the cow methane under control, and large companies take the brunt of the problem rather than them using their revenue to lobby its the botton end consumers fault. Plus the loss of rain forest. Seriously the only thing that could begin to undo the damage to the planet is being cut down at massive amounts daily. Send in troops and control that already UN if you have too. Screw their ecocomy were talking life or death everything on this planet much more serious than any terrorism. Ignorance and spin arguements isn't an excuse anymore perhaps we will really see war for the environment. God who knows? things have and are getting seriously bad.

You'll be lucky if you can get gas for less than 109.9 in GVR. Gets as high as 118.9. Although we have a 3.5 discount at the pump for some strange reason. Do you have this anywhere else?

Gas is never a factor in bankruptcy. Most people go bankrupt from putting frivilous expenses on their credit cards, or from bad business decisions.. Been close to the latter more times than I would like to admit.
Either way, it really doesn't work like that. Gas is still 108.9 in Kelowna... I don't own a car though, so it doesn't affect me.

In Ontario the tax component of $1.00 gasoline is approx 32 cents (excise tax, provincial tax, GST). So thats a starting point of 32% tax. Add to that the various taxes/royalties paid on crude oil production, profits through the system, local taxes etc and you esily get over 50%

Anyone that can afford to buy the above noted vehicles hardly care about the gas price.
