So they will probably both still be around this week. Both were OOS when I ordered though.

Has anyone actually seen a difference in these dvd's? Like, do you own both a normal copy and a super bit copy, played them back to back? I was always tempted to buy one but never have.

I've never watched a Superbit DVD. Can you see the difference between it and the same DVD that's 'normal'?
springroll
Oct 6th, 2005, 02:56 PM
The differences in picture quality is subtle but you could definetely tell on a bigger screen.
The main selling point for me is the addition of DTS soundtracks to these titles. DTS is what makes all the differences to me. They just sounds so much richer and dynamic.

Apparently they remove all the extra **** so they have more room on the DVD to encode the video at a higher rate.
Fifth Element Superbit is reference quality! If you have a nice TV or projector, this DVD should show you why you payed the big bucks!
ISF has listed it as one of the best reference DVDs:

I have the ultimate edition Fifth Element which is superbit. Looks great and a lot of people do use it as reference dvd. I believe I saw it on sale at Futureshop for like 2/$30 a few weeks ago. I paid $28 for it by itself.
I will pick up a few superbits (probably the spiderman 1/2), but not that many because I dont want to buy the dvd again when hi def dvds are finally out.
Looks like Blue Ray is going to emerge as the winner with the hd dvd studios moving to the Blue Ray side. I hope it does win. It has much higher storage.

though the bigger the screen, the bigger the difference you can see.

That picture is misleading. A DVD-9 has 8.5 GB of space. From the diagram, one assumes that a superbit dvd uses up all the space. HOWEVER, IT'S NOT THE CASE. For instancee, it may only fill up 6GB and the other 2.5 GB is wasted.
Anyway, superbit is a nice alternative to those who don't watch extras. The picture & audio quality is outstanding in Starship Troopers and Fifth Element. IMO two of the best superbits out there.

The "larger" audio component on the left includes the audio tracks of the special features. The audio component on the right is only for the movie.

As far as i know, no DVD will look better than the 720p HDTV-rips that you currently have. All DVDs are 480i-based, even if you upconvert them, they are still SDTV quality. Detail (lines) wise, the 720p DIVX files would look better.
The point here is though, they are not very heavily compressed, so there'd be less artifacts nor jittering. Plus the sound would be full-bit DTS.

Short answer: No
Keep in mind, non-superbit DVDs usually have the English soundtrack, French, DD2.0 soundtrack, sometimes a Spanish soundtrack, and even a commentary. Combine them together, they would take quite a bit of space. Which is why they took a large chunk out of that pie.
Whereas with a Superbit DVD, there's the English DD5.1 soundtrack and the full-bit (somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this one) DTS soundtrack (which can take more than 1 gig sometimes).

You don't have to wait till the 14th to get these DVD deals. They are actually being promoted on the Future Shop website already. If you look on the right side of the DVD main page, you'll see the promotions there. However, the system does not reflect the prices when you checkout so you have to call customer service and they'll adjust them for you. The CS lady said that there's a glitch in the system so that's why they are not correctly priced when you checkout, I think what really happened was that they prematurely advertised the promotions since it's supposed to start on the 14th and the system simply doesn't recognized that there's a sale now. One more thing, on the list of the Superbits that are on sale, Leon the Professional is not on the list so that might be instores only.

The issue with 720p AVIs would be... what was their source?? If their source wasn't at least 720p then they are just DVD quality encoded to 720p... so... they can't really be "better" than their source... If the source was perfect, and the encode was done properly, they would be better.

I would say that Superbit is worth it under one of the following scenerios:
1) You have a high quality big screen TV, and surround sound set-up. (this will allow you to possibly notice the improved audio and video quality)
2) You are someone who absolutely must have the "best" quality. It's a matter of pride/bragging rights/knowing your collection has the best in it (future proofing your DVD collection for when you do have the big screen TV and surround sound system.. ;))
Why should you not bother with Superbit?
1) Once HD-DVD and Blue Ray are out, the movies will probably be re-released in even better quality on those formats... so if you want the "best"... it will be outdated soon
2) You don't have a big screen TV or surround sound system to benefit from the slight improvements made on Superbit DVDs
3) You can get the same movie on DVD for less in a non-Superbit addition (and don't feel the barely noticeable improvements Superbit offers are worth paying more for...)
4) You like the "extras" that DVDs come with...

If there's a particular movie you love and don't have and comes in Superbit I'd definitely grab it. This is a pretty good deal. However, if you're into extras and commentaries, etc skip Superbit. For me the DTS soundtrack is worth it alone. And in some cases like 5th element, the Superbit version is definitely worthwhile.
Superbit is the way DVD's SHOULD be released. Not doubledipping lke all the studios do. There should be 1 disc for least compressed video and DTS soundtrack and 2nd disc for extras. But hey, I guess if the studios can get away with 4-5 releases of the same movie why not steal our money.

Sorry I don't have a scanner. The two I bought originally scanned at full price, so I thought I was going to have to argue. The cashier went to give me the large total and hit return on the keyboard or something, and it then updated the total to the sale price.
The two line items went to $12.50 each, and then I had 2 more items added of "2 for $25 promo". The sku for the promo was 10066537-A9MA.
I made sure to pick two from the list of 32 shown online. This was at the Heartland store in Mississauga.

I also picked up two last night (Oct 7). The sale is totally unmarked in the store (which is why there were some left for me  ) but like the poster above me said, they ring in at full price and then the register does it's magic and it pops up with the sale price. The girl at the register did a doubletake at the sale price since the sticker price of the two DVDs was over 80 dollars.
Anyone FS person who tells you differently is a dork.

Me too, I'm going to try later today.
Superbit DVD's are really good for short movies (less than 2 hours) for movies that are closer to 3 hours on a single DVD like LOTR it wouldn't make much of a difference. You can't add bits beyond the physical capacity of the disc itself.
Fifth element looks so good because it was a short movie, the original release was very small in GB size as they used a standard encoding pass.
I would like to have seen a LOTR 2-disc Superbit with intermission about 90 minutes in each episode. I don't mind switching discs to go get popcorn and take a washroom break if it means better picture.

I agreed, the next generation DVD format has no clear winner. I wouldn't buy a single HD-DVD/Blu-Ray movie until there is a clear winner. I would hate to buy movies for the competing camp and then realize that they lost. One thing is for sure and that is DVD will continue to be sold for the forseeable future.

You can try searching for "superbit" on the Futureshop site to see most of the available titles. I visited the London North FS and there really wasn't anything I wanted there, so I wasn't able to confirm the sale pricing (they have a bunch of copies of Desperado, Cliffhanger, Panic Room and Dracula... and that's about it). I did grab Snatch SB for $14.95, but that was part of another sale.

One thing to keep in mind, if you're planning to get The Fifth Element, pick up the Ultimate Edition which is under the 2 for $25 promotion (not the superbit one) instead of the Superbit Edition. The Ultimate Edition's disc 1 is basically the same as the superbit disc(same video and audio) and the second disc has all the extras that the Superbit version doesn't have.

The BB manager said he would price match FS if I could find a copy in the store. Their inventory system said they had one copy in stock but wasn't in the section.
Thanks! :D

now I can get the dvds that I culdn't get that is online hehe hopefuly they won't go oos.
I was able to order both The Fifth Element SB and Das Boot SB even though they were showing as being out of stock on the website. It's not like any of these discs are out of print, and FS has a tendency of miraculously finding more inventory in their warehouses.

Picked up Bad Boys I & II, The One, Desperado, The Mask of Zorro, Underworld, The Professional, and The Fifth Element.
:D
Bought half of those online and half in-store, and got them all at the 2 for $25 deal too... I got the invoice via email for the online orders.
WG.
Did The Professional come up as $12.50 or did they have to adjust the price at the register ? Apparently, The Professional is not supposed to be included in the 2 for $25 deal.

Actually.... I saw that some ppl had problems when purchasing Leon in-store so I bought it online, that way I call a CSR about the pricing error and then they notify the powers to be about the error. They can't update the price on the site but they will send an invoice via email.
The movies were sent out right away, so if they did say that Leon wasn't on sale then I would've bitched... "I don't want the movie at regular price... had I known that, that wasn't part of the deal I wouldn't have purchased... etc."
Luckily I didn't have to, and they gave it to me for 12.50... although, they did charge me 12.51 for Underworld.... wtf, eh?

I purchased online as well to avoid the hassle of dealing with the store manager and running around to find the movie in store. I spoke to a csr yesterday who submitted a price adjustment to his supervisor for approval. I called this morning and spoke with another csr who confirmed that the price adjustment has been approved. I looked at my order and it has been "released" but the price is still $33.99. I hope I get it for $12.50; otherwise, I'm returning it.

You can still order it, they might find a copy holding a table up. I bought 5th element and Zorro... both copies were suppose to be sold out, but they shipped it immediately.

When I go to the FS website, I can't add the movie to my cart. I tried calling as well and they said it's sold out and cannot be ordered at this time.

Must be nice... can't believe they charged me $0.01 extra for Underworld.... I bet the put Leon's status as OOS, cuz people were screwing them over by buying it online. My local store is suppose to get more copies next week.

Just got back from the Kennedy Rd FS in Scarborough and a few Spider-man 1's were on the 2 for $25 shelf. Took that and Lawrence of Arabia up to cashier and it didn't scan. I complained that they were on the shelf so she sent me over the the service desk where they changed it :D . They didn't have any BHD there so I'm stuck looking somewhere else.

BHD now works online, just do a search and add it to your cart. It shows a unit price of $14.99 and can be combined with another superbit for $25. I have 2 Superbit BHD's in my cart right now and it shows a total of $25. I don't think I will order though - great movie but I don't know if I could stomach watching it again!

They now have a display for all superbit titles at the front of most Future Shop stores. They are $14.99 each or 2 for $25. I saw a guy setting up the display and he had a memo from Future Shop telling him to set up the titles in alphabetical order. So I asked where Leon the Professional was and he said, "If it isn't in the display, it's not on sale. " They didn't have Black Hawk Down or Starship Troopers in stock, but they were supposed to be according to the display memo.
So I went to Best Buy around the corner and they pricematched both those DVD's for $25. Also, be aware that the Das Boot DVD only has the German audio track in DTS and the English is in Stereo Surround. The English 5.1 mix from the original DVD is not on the superbit version.

Went to the Vaughn location and they got a nice display of all the superbits.
Picked up BHD, Lawrence of Arabia, Spiderman 2, and Underworld.
They had one copy left of Crouching Tiger and they also have Adaptation on superbit. One copy left of Spiderman 1.
Did not see Leon but didn't look for it on the shelf either.
Also picked up Cinderella, get a tin box with it. This will make it easier for the "boss" to accept my dvd purchases. :cheesygri

Someone had scanned the flyer in advance and it showed SP 1 as one of the 2 for $25 Superbit DVD's. The flyer and sale is out tomorrow.
FS website still shows a $25.99 price

Just picked up Superbit WS copies of Spiderman 1 and 2 at FS in Halifax, $25 for the pair. They did not ring in properly but the CSR manually changed the price for me.
Thanks to the OPfor the heads up...saw lots of titles there including BHD, 5th Element, XXX, etc.

My Dracula and Leon The Professional discs are out for delivery. The Leon was for a friend of mine but he got his own copy. I'll probably sell my Leon at cost or return it since I purchased a copy in the US months ago for a lot more. :(
I checked out my online invoice. The GST and PST were calculated using the pre-adjusment price of $67.98 but the invoice states that the total cost before tax is $25. I spoke with a csr and was told that the correct tax will be charged to my account. Seems like they need a better accounting system.

Just got Black Hawk Down and Spider-man 1 in store at Yonge/Eg. It came up 2 for $25 at checkout with no problem. So it appears Spider-man 1 does qualify.

I just did a price match on these at the Best Buy on Billy Bishop Way (near Yorkdale). I was expecting to get turned down but the csr was very cool about it, checked FS website and asked me if I wanted more than the two I had in my hand. I picked up Fifth Element and The One. He would've given me the 2 for $25 on any Superbit DVD.
YMMV

Panic Room and Punch Drunk Love both came out as Superbit initially.
Panic Room got the deluxe 3-disc treatment afterwards.
