I've looked at a ton of subs lately and the Athena AS-P6000 seems to be the best for the money (12" driver, goes down to 21hz and is $550) but I'm sure theres something better and for less money! Can anyone offer some insight?

I've heard good things about velodyne but never actually experienced for myself. Pricing is pretty decent at FS which also carries the Athena's you mentioned above.

My brother's sony sub are not audiophile but it sounds damn good.

Thanks.
I'm also looking for places that sell subs. All I can think of is 2001, FS and BB.

I wouldn't say that Athena sub is a good value for the price.

If you can spare 700$ you can get a HSU STF-3 shipped with taxes in.

I need more information. What size of room? What mains? What is the focus for the sub? (IE 90% music / 10% HT) What levels do you typically listen at? How flexible is placement?

Are you handy with tools? Do you have a plunge rotor or access to one?

If I had 700$ to spend on a sub right now I would build one. Adire Tempest 15" and a 300 watt plate amp in 170 - 220 liter enclosure.

You should also do a search for infinite baffle, and see if you can work that in at all, as it will provide the best bass out of any other option.

My advice is don't skimp, or you'll end up unhappy with the sub very quickly.....

I've done a bunch of research on IB subs but I couldn't really find a place to get 15" subs locally or at least in canada for ~ $120 ea! http://www.creativesound.ca/ has the 360w plate amp for $220 /w shipping. $700 is just too much to spend on a sub right now.

The room is ~3200ft cubed.
It will be 100% HT and listen at regular movie DB's.
I can place anywhere (but infront of the listener in reality anyway)

I was thinking about making a sonotube sub but all the components and time added up to ~$550 anyway.

PS, if anyone knows where I can get a phoenix gold R12D, I'd appreciate it!

don't forget, you get what you pay for. if this is supposed to be a long term investment, spend the cash now and you wont regret it later.

oc613 has a good point.

Ok, If I were to build a IB sub, it would be $220 for the plate amp plus the 15" drivers. Now, does anyone know where I can get 15" drivers suitable for building this sub in canada?
