Normally they take 2AA's with a battery life of 6months depending on your usage.

If its for desktop I tend like mice with a recharge base like mx700 and mx1000 and some other keyboard combos by logitech. You don't have to replace the battery, well not for a while at least. And they tell you when the battery is starting to run low, so you can charge it soon.

Well, I like my wireless mouse because it's rechargeable and works quite well. However, it's pricey. I also have wireless mouse for the laptop that uses batteries, it seems to last for months, so it's really not all that bad. If you are concerned about battery usage, just get a standard wireless mouse and buy rechargeable batteries. However, if you like to game, then I'd either buy a higher end mouse or just stick with a gaming wired mouse.

I find wireless notebook optical mouse better for their purpose
I use them with laptops, and rechargeable AA's
For desktop? Wired MX500 does it for me.

I have a wireless MX700 mouse. Its an OK mouse, but i don't find it the greatest for FPS games. It just seems laggy to me. The only other wireless mouse i have used is an MS Wireless Explorer, and it was even worse for games. Its lag was huge.
I still prefer wired devices.
