Looks/design is extremely important. Being a fashion statement is the other (it makes you cool.)

marketing.

you never see mp3 players being advertise so heavily as Ipods.

Personally I think there are way better ones out there in the market, but they just don't advertise. Apple will just blow the socks of them in the advertising race. especially now with the Nanos

also, all the peripherals you can buy with your ipod.

and the aftermarket manucturers are getting into the peripherals too.

ipod took the lead in the mp3 player market after their first ipod came out

remeber when it happened, everyone wnated it..then their next version came out, and next and now nanos which are pretty hot right now...most shoppers if not all are sold out ever since their started carrying the nanos

i guess reputation from their first ipod brought up to the nano now, as well it was the looks and poplularity but now there are some pretty nice sony/creative ones that are way better...

ipods arent even that great

It increases the chances of you getting mugged because of those silly white earbuds.

There are much more cost effective MP3 players out there.

those silly white earbuds are a status in of themselves. I saw a guy wearing one of them, and later, i saw him fumbling around his mp3 player, which wasn't even an ipod. some cheap China knockoff peanut shaped mp3 player.

the guy wore lookalike ipod earbuds just for the status of it. what up nowadays

aside from the haters out there, the ipod is actually a pretty good player. it does the job it was designed to do with an easy to use interface that no one else has surpassed.

There is nothing wrong with ipod. its a decent mp3 player, but a little delicate because its hard-drive based... the problem is with ipod users and ipod impostors.

I don't even us the ipod buds, the ones I use arn't even white, they are black. I sold my ipod buds with my MD Player, they were never opened so the person I sold the player to got a pair of brand new buds.

I like my ipod, I got it almost 2 years ago and its still working great, no problem with the battery, and I've never needed to use if for as long as the battery is rated for, even during exams and long days of studying it hasn't gone dead on me. I like the interface; I kind of prefer the design of the 3rd gen with the touch buttons more then the click wheel ones. It does what it supposed to do, play MP3's, and it does it damn good with a great user interface. I don't understand why people would want FM tuners and recorders in their MP3 players. Just a little note on iriver, I've never used one, but they have gotten good reviews (ipods generally get better still though) but am I the only one that thinks iriver is REALLY stupid name, and they should really change if they want to sell more players to the less techy population?

Oh and any HDD based player will be just as “delicate” I’ve treated mine pretty rough, and it still working great.

The Apple Click Wheel is what makes the iPod. No one has come close to a better interface.

Use one and you'll start to understand. It's very slick in design and the way one operates it.

they're great because you can hold 999999999999999999 songs, but only have battery life for 99.

:)

I'll add that the software (iTunes) is great as well.

Yes...for once you could buy a song for a reasonable price...Jobs did a great job (no pun intended) at negotiating a contract for selling music. I read that prices may go up because the music companies want to raise the price of all the music that's sold on iTunes.

Well iPods are part trend. I mean it's "cool" to own an iPod these days. I used to be worried about wearing the white earbuds out in public but I couldn't care less now cause everyone and their grandfathers wear the earbuds. What I think is dumb is when some people walk around with the new lanyards around their neck with their Nanos hung on them for everyone to see.

By the way, anyone else notice that there seems to be a major shortage of 4gig Nanos? Everywhere's got 2 gigs but all the 4 gigs are on back order.

there are some problems with nanos which even apple acknowledged.
