well, i have a notebook that im particularly fond of. however, it's CD/DVD drive is external, so once in a while i'll post it up here on RFD for trade or sale.

here is my story.

i got this e-mail from someone who i have never heard of or met. i assume they saw a post here on rfd. be aware, i have not changed this e-mail at all. he sent it to me in capitals, and there was to title in the message.

HELLO SELLER,

I'AM INTRESTED IN YOUR LAPTOP AND I WOULD WANT TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE THEM IN LARGE QUANTITY BECAUSE I WANT AS MUCH AS FOUR IT.
I WANT YOU TO MAIL ME BACK NOW TO THE CONDITION OF THE LAPTOP.
SO I EXPECT TO HEAR FROM YOU SO I CAN ARRANGE FOR THE PAYMENT.
THANKS.
JOHNNY O.

i would also like to point out, i have never made a thread in which i have said i would like to sell the unit. i have left replies in other threads offering it as a trade, or possibly a sale to someone who is looking for an ultra portable, but never more than 2-3 times total.

the capitals and lack of reference, aswell as lack of message title got me concerned, but i humoured him.

this is the second e-mail i recieved.

Hello seller,
I have had and understand all what you mean.
I want to use it for my business in Nigeria and I want it so urgent even will like to make the payment tomorrow if you provide the information I request for now and will send the money throgh western union to you.
Am located in Ile-ife in Nigeria i want you to give me your
full neme, house address or office address, your country, zip code, city and your email address so that the western union can bring the money to your door and then ship the laptop to me and the western union will inform you when i make the payment tomorrow.
Thanks.
Johnny O.

now, i dont know much about scams, but if the capitals in the first e-mail and lack of a title didnt do it for me, it's the reference to nigeria. i cant put my finger on it, but i seem to recall a huge amount of scams coming out of there (wether or not the person actually lives there i dont know)

immidiatly after, i recieved this

I also want you to accumulate the shpping and the actual cost so as to settle all at a time.

thought you all might find it interesting.

if you're "Johnny O" and see this thread, feel free to reply! i wont be e-mailing you anytime soon anyways.

when i posted my sony clie for sale i got a similar e-mail from one Stella Cole. the english was very bad, i was asking for $150 and she offered $200. she also offered to pay via money order first and she had a fedex shipping account so all the charges would goto her. she claimed she sent the money order through bidpay online and i should receive an e-mail for verification from western union. i received a verification e-mail, but it was from westernuniononline@dr.com. needless to say i still havn't received the actual money order yet.

you could always check the IP on the email... see if it matches to any google searches or maybe even a static IP with an actual name...

There was a thread here a while back about a guy who got scammed on eBay and tracked the seller through the email IP to some big law company...

i dont have proggies to check IP from e-mail.

wish i did. because i used to have a cool program (Nero trace pro?) that would trade an address with an I.P. or atleast, traced to the adress of the ISP. still pretty damn close if you ask me.

Sorry to deter the thread but I was wondering if anyone has heard what happened to that story? Has the guy bothered to finish up the story?

Back to this thread, should've just lured him in some more. If anything, it'll make your emails more interesting to screw with his head.
