You could always arrange to have a job standing at the doorway to a washroom, re-directing people to the sink if they try to leave without using it.

What's really gross, is people who don't wash their bodies in the first place, then pee all over their hands.

For those of us who keep our genitals clean and are skillful enough to not pee on our hands, washing your hands is completely redundant.

When you see somebody washing their hands in a public washroom, you can tell they're a person who doesn't care about hygiene!

Easier solution, design public bathrooms that do not have doors.

Seen plenty of them now, its just like a mini maze and a fan at the roof to make sure the odours don't waft out.

No it isn't. When you urinate, the urine hitting the urinal/toilet creates a fine spray that gets everywhere...including your hands...along with the germs that were sitting on the surface areas of the urinal/toilet. The spray can be very fine and you can't really feel it on your hands. Flushing is even worse as the amount of spray goes EVERYWHERE. One other thing...urine is sterile when it leaves the human body. However, after it touches the germ laden walls of a urinal/toilet, it is no longer sterile. The dirtiest (most germ laden) spot in the washroom is the soap dispenser. The second dirtiest is the door knob/handle. Ironically, one of the cleanest spots is the top surface of the toilet seat that everyone sits on.

I saw this on a science show that looked at the germs in the washroom and it explained the myths and did a battery of tests to prove/disprove them.

Europeans are avant-garde like that.

I always use a tissue to open a door. I don't care if I look weird. Not one bit.

In Schiphol airport they have fake flies in the urinals to encourage accuracy

too many times i've gone to use the washroom and notice ppl don't wash their hands, and then it leaves me to have to grab some paper to open the doors...

i also don't like it when ppl wash their hands but don't wipe them or dry them off...it leaves the doorknob wet

At Jungfrau in Switzerland, There's a sad "smiley" face in the urinal that turns into a happy "smiley" face when it gets hit by urine. I actually took my camera out to take a picture. I wanted to take a picture of the happy face, but... :D

I realize that it is improper (and illegal) to take a picture in a public bathroom, but it was so funny :)

Just how much germs and bacteria is in our urine anyway? Any biology or chemistry major care to explain that? Do urinals have higher concentration of germs than regular objects?

so if the urinal gets cleaned after each day, and urine is sterile, how does the wall of a urinal get dirty in first place?

It gets dirty by people being raised to believe that anything to do with natural bodily functions (especially the ones near our sex organs) are "dirty". It's the same reason we foolishly flush our human waste into our water system rather than logically composting it and using it for fertilizer. We live in a pretty psychologically f'ed up civilization...

Airborne bacteria, people spitting into the urinal and bacteria that survive the cleaning process.

well i'm not sure where this thread is going but I would like to say this. Some people have an allergy to the soap they put in the bathroom and thus you don't see them using soap so I think that all bathrooms should have a bottle of purelle by each soap dispenser.

so people should at least rinse with their hands with water and PURELLE PURELLE PURELLE!!!

Solutions:
1. Always design the washroom doors as 'PUSH' to exit the washroom and 'PULL' to enter the washroom. No need to use your bare hands to push the door open.

2. Urinals should go deeper or somehow designed to eliminate 'splashback' Those egg shaped urinals are the worst in terms of 'splashback'

3. Have those hand sanitizer liquids like they do at hospitals available. Saw a suggestion on TV that it was actually cleaner to just carry your own sanitizer liquid to 'wash' instead of using the public faucet, save for the hands free faucets.

4. Have lids on the toilets that auto close after you've left the stall and auto flush, preventing small feces particles going into the air with every flush The crap in the air eventually finds its way to the hand dryer clogging it up.

Yes, I know. I've given this too much though :P

how bout hands free everything...

no doors, use maze
auto flush
auto faucet
auto paper towel and/or dryer

only thing we have to touch is the stall doors, which i don't think can be made hands free for reasonable cost

It gets dirty because the stuff that comes out of our body is our body's waste. What comes out of us can make other people sick. Simple as that. Just like ppl can get sick from someone sneezing and not washing their hands, someone coughing...this stuff comes straight out of your body with all germs. Especially feces which is laden with bacteria. How much effort is it really to take 15-20 seconds to wash your hands?

It's worse on an airplane lavatory. I was in a lineup of about 5 (both men and women) waiting to use the facilities. When it was my turn, I went in, and I noticed the sink and area were completely dry. I ended up using paper towel to lock/unlock pull the door, and a foot to flush the toilet.

I never said that I don't believe in washing my hands, nor that I don't believe in the scientific principles of immunology. I just said that I don't necessarily associate "dirtyness" with just going to the bathroom...
