hi
i was wondering if anyone knew the cost to activate rogers pay as you go onto a deactiveated phone. see i was at a yard sale on the weekend and they were selling a rogers flip phone with charger, and car charger for a dollar, so i bought it figuring if it didn't work oh well. well it works, well as far as i can tell it works, it needs a sim card before it lets you get into the menu's. So i was wondering if anyone knew how much it cost's. I've heard you buy the sim card (was quoted $25, i know you can get them cheaper) and then buy air time and that was it. Then i was also told that you do the above plus a $50. So any info would be great.

i also bought a bell one that he had at the yard sale with charger, no car charger for a dollar, and that one will cost $75 to activate with $30 air. so i'm trying to figure out which one is cheaper to activate.

thanks in advance
Laura

P.S. i searched but couldn't seem to find a topic already about this, sorry if there was one

Is Rogers the controlling arm of Fido as well? Or am I thinking of Sprint/Telus? I'm also considering going to Fido or Rogers. I'm going to defect from Bell.

I have a spare Rogers Prepaid $10 card selling for $10 (save the tax?)

Forgot if there's a charge for Prepaid Activation, there might?

Rogers owns both Fido & Sprint Canada

you might want to test out the phone with a friends sim card first to see if the phone actually works.

Recycling this topic, I need a cellphone for emergencies only, 10 bucks a month is reasonable to spend on that, which is the best payasyougo plan? I have both a rogers and a fido phone.

There's a lot of them for sale in the forum, and many other places. Should be around $15 or so can get you a new one

Rogers will probably have better coverage over Fido, but they'll gouge you on the little things (ie. check voicemail, email-to-text, etc.)

As for the OP, you can buy a Rogers SIM and activate it online, or call Rogers and they will do it for you. The only benefit of calling, is they will let you choose a number (to an extent, its mostly 416 over 647 area code...). Some stores will activate it on the spot, but they may or may not charge you for it.
The cheapest plan is 10$ per month, 33 cents per minute all day.

If you just need a phone for emergency use, Virgin has the best plan as someone already pointed out, but you will need to get a Virgin handset...

Hope that helps

No, not unless they've changed their policy of late.

Sort of an unrelated question... does anyone know if a Motorola v220 phone wil work with Virgin Mobile? As far as I know, it used to be with Rogers. I got it from a friend for free, and my Bell Prepaid is about to expire. This might come in handy. I rarely use cellphone so the smaller amount that last the longest would be exactly what I need. Virgin Mobile sounds promising

Pricey? Find me a pay-as-you-go phone that's cheaper, then.

So they only have 3 phones available? Can people use their own phone and buy VirginMobile's SIM card (if there's such thing)?

Virgin is on the CDMA network (Bell's), not GSM like Roger's, so no SIM card. There is a possibility of using Bell or Telus' unlocked phones with Virgin though, but don't quote me on this.

Ok. At least now I know (well, sort of) GSM and CDMA is for which network. :D Thanks

Since Rogers and Fido have integrated they now have the same coverage. With Fido on prepaid, you can roam in Canada on the Rogers network with no additional charges and you get free incoming text/pictures messages.

You can't activate non-Bell phones on Bell and the same with Virgin. If you want to use your own phone you'll have to go to Rogers or Fido.
