During an interview this weekend promoting Elizabethtown, Kirsten Dunst confirmed rumors to Zap2it that Thomas Haden Church will play Sandman and Topher Grace is Venom in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, opening in theaters on May 4, 2007.

"We have really great people though as the villains in this film, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace -- Venom and Sandman," said Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson in the Spidey films.

"Maybe I wasn't supposed to say that," she added before reversing her claim. "It's the other way around. You're right," she conceded to a journalist.

Dunst has yet to receive a script for the third film that will begin shooting in January. "But I know the general story. There's a lot that they're trying to fit into this one."

Well, she's getting fired after this one.

Church seems too angular to play Venom, and Grace as Sandman doesn't makes sense unless they're taking a totally new tack with the character.

The villain I keep waiting for is the Vulture; not the balding geriatric version, but the 2099 edition:

I can't find it online (and don't have a scanner), but there's one part where Spider-man and the Vulture battle through the decaying city and through a church. Were it done in the movies, it'd be the greatest superhero battle of all time, bar none.

Maybe she's just throwing people off....well, at least I hope she is. Sandman and Venom in the same movie, odd.

Topher Grace wtf?

grace is too young to be sandman

maybe they're going with a whole "a guy from school gets into a lab accident and turns into a sand guy" or something.

you know how these movies always deviate from the original stories and totally ruin them...

I like Sandman, but something about adding Venom strikes me as being weird. Oh well, I'm sure whatever Raimi has in mind, he'll put on one hell of a show.

Venom and Carnage would have been better. It'd take a ton of CG though.

topher grace is wicked. i like him from that 70s whow

but i thought it would've been better if he played spiderman in the fourth movie. he looks a tobey. and since this is tobeys last movie too. i heard.

o well anyway i'll still watch it.

if this is tobey's last movie as spidey and they want a replacement, I would think Topher would be the best one, so maybe they won't use him in this upcoming one as a villain in case they do want to continue? Who knows.

Seems like they have a lot of plot lined up for this one? Sandman and Venom? Venom is a major characture and if they want to stay true to form with the whole symbiote from space thing, then they have a LOT of story to make up for off the start. I think they are getting over ambitout here and will try to squeeze too much into the next movie...
