View Full Version : anyone into real hiphop?

You know... The real raw *****.
The kinda emcees that can throw it down on the mic in any freestyle battle and make good songs without the cash and hoes in the lyrics.
Talib Kweli, mos def, common sense, KRS1, rakim, Pete rock & CL smooth, Jurrassic 5, K-OS! from toronto, Black eyed peas before they went mainstream with that girl, brand nubian.....
Whatever happen to that kind of hiphop? It was really positive... They spoke the truth about the dwindling state of hiphop and they even promoted social conciousness.
I know common just dropped a new album.... Got any favs u wanna talk about? How about New up and coming emcees on the positive tip.
But then theres the guys that mix the positive tip/raw hiphop emceeing, while doing alil of the mainstream stuff... like NAS.

sometimes i get these fuzzy feelings when it comes to hiphop...
I just remember my days of hitting up alll the rap shows...
going to all the bboying (break dancing) events... B2du all run by Dyzee until he left for the states.
Freestyle and break dancing in the park.
With the lil ghetto blaster and card board taking it back to 1984 yet it was the yr 2000.
Hiphop lives foreverrrr no matter how many whack emcees are out there speakin bout sitting sideways and whos tipping bling bling etc...
Kinda sad to see how its 'dying' in the mainstream... But i guess only a small minority will know the positive roots of hiphop culture.

Common is one of my favourites. i was listening to his older albums today; One day it'll all make sense and Like Water for Chocolate. Jedi Mind tricks is good as well. Visions of Ghandi > * but stay away if you can't handle homophobia. De La Soul is one of the greatest. The Grind Date is a sick album.
and f*ck all these garbage artists that we have today. 50 cent, Gunit, Nelly, Mike jones, ludacris, etc. I was reading an issue of Maxim recently and i saw an interview where the Game proclaimed that he was probably the 2nd greatest rapper today behind 50 cent. hah... today's mainstream hiphop is so horrible. Always the same stupid songs about women, money, gangsters, etc and stupid feuds with other rappers.

no, it's this (TIFF link) (http://www.e.bell.ca/filmfest/2005/films_description.asp?id=62). It's not completed yet, but from the rough edit I saw, it's very good.
If you're into the "bad" or "garbage" hiphop mentioned above, you may not like it as the music has a positive, uplifting message.
If you're expecting a 2 hour Chappelle's Show comedy sketch, skip this documentary, and rent Chappelle's Show season 1 & 2.

Dillated Peoples, Common, Roots, Nas (few misses), Talib Kweli, Mos Def, etc. they are all great...
although KRS1 seems too 'black-panther'-ish for me.
while we are on the topic of crappy hipPOP, 50cent is no more gangster than LLcoolJ, people should take him less seriously IMO. the chart is filled with rappers with club beats, and those rappers taking care of their cronies by releasing more club beats under their name.
just great.

If you don't like Black Pantherish hip hop, then you have no clue what hip hop is about. Not saying I do, because I'm not a huge fan, but that's the main base. Do your history homework.

Yeah, I used to be a HUGE hip hop heads in the late-90's up until the last couple of years because it's been so terrible as of late.
Some of my favorite artists include: Ras Kass, Common Sense, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast, The Roots, Binary Star (and the Subterraneous Crew), Slug (Atmosphere), Sage Francis, RJD2, Aesop Rock, Mobb Deep (of the 90's), Louis Logic, Little Brother, Last Emporer, K-oS, Jay-Z (of the 90's), Illogic, Immortal Technique, Ice Cube (of the 80's and early-90's), Kool Keith (of the 80-90's), Devin (smoothest shite ever!!), Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Cormega, Cunninlynguists, Nas (of the 90's), etc.
I listen to a lot of new and old rock now, with occasional "good" new hip hop.

I dont mind LL COOL J too much.. In fact i really like him since he kinda pioneered that whole 'love rap' kinda thing... So its interesting to see where it all came from.
And back in teh Day.. NWA and all that gangster rap.....They were really gangsterz. And even if they were playing up on the image of the gangster lifestyle, they were telling it how it is. But inside the music of the early gangster rap years basically had this message
"You think its all goo din America. but black ppl are shooting/killin each other everyday. why?"

history homework on what? why is it such a bad thing to NOT like KRS1, whose lyrics I found (when I listened way back) rather militant, and laden with message of activism much more so than other "conscious rappers".
who are you to tell me i have no clue about hiphop? since when did hiphop become a subject worthy of any meaningful history research?
dont be acting like you are experts... every time I engage in a conversation about hiphop, I find most people are as clueless as I am, or more.

Nah man. yall just gotta chill.
Tehres so many different angles you can attack the phenom of hiphop.
remember its history is only maybe... 30 yrs old.
Its young enuff that the pioneers are still around. Theres guys like crazy legs and even DJ cool herc.
What started as party music\xpression... was a precussor to all the different types of hiphop\rap out there.
It wont ever stay the same. It evolves in a very strange way just like other music.

I agree that it's a phenomenon, will it be a notable one? perhaps, but you are right, it's still too young to determine that.
I do see the link between civil rights movement and hiphop, not as a continuation from one to other, but more along the lines of hiphop (all of disciplines) as a by-product of sub-conciously continued discrimination against minority groups within a society that's still largely ruled by a single class (WASP), at least in North America... that's why hiphop has transplanted itself so well in other parts of the world, although players may be different, but are in same context.
it will evolve, but my point was, I simply detest those who dismiss others opinion without giving much insight as to why like vancouverforsale did.

I never said everything from today is bad, but a good chunk of it is garbage. I still keep up with the current hip hop scene. Stuff from now that I like: One Be Lo (of Binary Star), Little Brother, J-Live, Atmosphere, lots of underground/indie stuff. And I still do listen to the classics from the 90's occasionally, like Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Resurrection, Soul on Ice, etc.

I Thought i'd inject some life back into this thread.
I'm a writer for a urban publication & here's my take on the state of HipHop music. I'm still a fan, but like Chris Rock said in 1 of his recent stand ups...he love Hip Hop but he's sick of defending it.
I still check for artsists such as: The Roots (did yall hear they just signed 2 Def Jam) | NativeTongues| DeadPrez | PharaoeMocch| Common | Kweli | Mos Def | BootCamp | Jeru | JediMidTricks |SlumVillage| Kanye (tho' his skills as an MC are in ?| OutKast| Likz| Hiero| WuTang| PE | etc...
My 0.02.
IMHP, southern rap is the poison of HipHop. The balance of power has shifted, now every label wants a southern artist or is trying to manufactur 1. If HipHop was woman......the machine took all that was good about HER (HipHop) made her say Uhhhh, & skeet- skeet-skeet, got her an SUV put 28inch spinners on her, got her some bling and some platinum teeth & took away most of her lyrical content & any message she had, repackaged & remodelled her, and impregnated her & then she gave birth to bastard children: slim thug, mike jones & paul wall & yayo all these no name artist who sell 100,000 copies out thier trunk & you never hear from them. Record labels helped to spread this poision and replicate this formula which is why you have every southern artist trying to cut a record with Lil'John.
Down south artists achive 3/4 the success of most HipHop artsist yet they put in 1/4 of the effort or less.
On another note, Tru HipHop is still alive and you just nee dto look a bit hardder to find it these days. Don't buy into or belive the hype.
Be on the lookout for:
Little Brother aka LB (a trio trio from NC feat. super producer 9th Wonder) | Justus League (a collective of 20+ MC's/ DJ's/Producers /singers from NC also incl. LB) | Legacy (an MC from NC also down with Justus League)
Saigon (a MC outta NYC been on the tape circuit 4 a while...he's the truth)
Lil' Scrappy (A southern MC who can spit fire..down with Lil'John & G-unit)
JaeHood (down with LOX & 1st artist signed to D-Block he's only 17)

I like some of the older stuff rather than the new stuff today.
I remember Rappin 4tay, Too Short, Ice T, Tupac Shakur, Nas, Killah Priest, Mountain Brothers, Xzibit, Ras Kass, King T, and a whole slew of other artist.
SOme of the guys mentioned above are not perfect examples to follow every second but, i do feel mostly they have (had?) important things/issues to say.
I also enjoy some of the more lower underground hip hop from Toronto like=
Theology 3, Masia one, Citizen Kane, Ghetto COncept, Maestro (thats right!), Monolith Crew, Collizhuan (Nefarious), Cinema Valente (alright Vietnamese rapper from Toronto), and more.
Like i said, i am not seeking a "perfect" "totally real" Rap artist. ALL i look for is good quality and honesty in an artist.

I'm almost 42, but I hear some of the newer songs here and there and find them to be very cynical and depressing. Music of the 70's and 80's and 90's, for the most part, wasn't like this. A lot of songs back then had messages of hope and gave you a good, positive feeling.

And the songs today for the main part i feel don't have that depth of emotion or meaning.
I mostly hear on those new style type radio stations songs made for the club or whatnot.
What ever happened to the sad songs that made you feel? or the uplifting songs that made you want to live? or the Hip Hop tracks that made you think/question things? what ever happened to the substance????!
**** you MTV, Muchmusic, BET, and commercial radio stations for contributing in the production of pop icons and images, rather then the creations of Artist and Musicians! ;(!
