1. Pulp Fiction - dialouge was brilliant, "The vulgarity-laced monologues and conversations ripple with humor and are ripe with points to ponder. Foot massages, hamburgers, comfortable silence, a gold watch, pot bellies, divine intervention, and filthy animals - all these and more receive the writer's attention as he presents meaningless issues in an intensely-fascinating and almost lyrical fashion. Who else (except perhaps David Mamet) can make profanity sound so poetic?"

2. resevior dogs - gritty violence, brilliant gripping script and plot twists to keep you in suspense. Intelligent and visceral at the same time.

3. Fargo - predictable story line but the way the film carried through was cool
4 fight club - the depicited graphic violence was wicked, but the underlying purpose was nature of man and what can happen when the numbing effects of day-to-day drudgery cause people to go a little crazy
5. seven

C'mon! No list of the top 5 can be complete without 2001: A Space Odyssey (http://imdb.com/title/tt0062622/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9MjAwMX xmdD0xfG14PTIwfGxtPTUwMHxjbz0xfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x;fc= 1;ft=170;fm=1). All-time, groundbreaking, mindblowing, classic sci-fi.

Now, move along - there's nothing else to see here...

1. Star Wars Trilogies - Some of the best cinematic memories for me, especially A New Hope when I was a wee impressionable little lad.
2. Indiana Jones Trilogy - Good old fashioned romp with a larger than life hero.
3. Terminator Trilogy - I just loved the concept of this trilogy. Preserving the past to save the future.
4. The Killer - The line seperating good and evil is blurred in this movie of loyalty and honour between a hitman and a cop.
5. Aliens - Just an awesome movie.

Not Ordered, and off the top of my head.

The Fog of War - The best documentary I've ever seen. The score by Phillip Glass is incredible, I don't think I've ever heard a movie score match the mood of the movie so well, or maybe the music sets the mood. In either case it's brilliant  . Easily the most interesting I've seen so far. Errol Morris really knows an good story when he sees one.

NARC - Intense, no fluff, violent. Two awsome actors. I can't think of anything meaningful to say, other than I love this film.

Endless Summer II - A fun, and funny film. Great story about 2 surfers following the summer and the surf around the world. Extremely rewatchable. If your thinking you need to know something about surfing to enjoy a film like this you'd be mistaken.

Lord of the Rings: EE trilogy - I've never seen a movie so epic in so many ways. A movie this long and yet this unceasingly entertaining is rare.

Winged Migration - The concept is simple, tell the story of migrating birds. The execution of that concept is stunning. Absolutely blew me away like no other movie.

Honestly I could replace these five movies with at least a dozen others, hehe. Keep in mind these are just personal favorites, and personal opinions. I say this because I don't want to burden people with super high expectations that might distract them from actually watching the film more closely than they normally might have had it not been recommended to them at all. Know what I mean? Bah, It's late and i'm rambling. If you watch 'em and like 'em I'm glad.

Now that's an interesting list!

Not just the standard pablum, but some really cool wacked out choices.

Off the top though, I hate the crappy LOTR adaptation and won't hear otherwise - don't waste my time - though the book itself, is my all-time favourite.

But Fog of War, Winged Migration, and Narc are awesome choices, 'cause they're great movies.

I regret to inform you that I have not seen Endless Summer II...

PS: I gotta hear some more of your dozen!!!

Some good movies off the top of my head that haven't been listed.

Kinsey - Entertaining documentary about Sex.
Crash - Touches on many things, and I find it really well done. Music, Actors etc.
Million Dollar Baby - Just a great picture, with a great story.
Saving Private Ryan - One of the better "Hollywood" War movies.
Kill Bill's - Entertaining action movie that touches on a lot of older Kung-Fu movies.
Good Will Hunting - Great story, good acting.
Hotel Rwanda - The story just makes you speechless.

A few others I enjoyed, although I wouldn't put in a list. Wedding Crashers, Batman Begins, The Mexican, Sin City, Gladiator, The Notebook and many many more.

This thread is about people's favorite movies, not just yours. Why don't you make your own thread and criticize other movies there?

Atleast he hasn't brought up his hatrid for Steven Spielberg yet, the way he goes on you'd think he was "touched" by him as a boy.

Top 5, part 2. (note: if anyone is offended at my posting 2 top fives, then let me know, and I'll post a third.)

Casino - Not everything that Scorcese (sp?) turns to gold, but in this case it did.

Baraka - Just a film of people and places from around the world. No story, no narrration. Just film and music. Another awsome Philip Glass score btw. This movie warrents the use of the word stunning, truly.

Spartan - The action is fast and exciting. The dialogue is intelligent. The story moves quickly. Great characters. I really can't find any flaws with this film (No, i'm not saying there isn't any. So get worked up :P )

Pi - I think most people have heard something about this little independant movie. I think it's outstanding. Short and to the point.

Rounders - Maybe a strange choice for a top 5. But I find this movie to be the most re-watchable and fun movies in my collection.

Edit - I just noticed someone had Heat on there top 5. Damn. Good pick. Makes me rethink my whole list. :|

Spielberg's nowhere near a good enough director to inspire hatred - he's just a TV hack with bigger budgets...

-Dr. Strangelove: Or How i learned to stop worrying and love the Bomb - Jetblack satire of Nuclear War (1962)
-Before Sunset - A super intense movie that turns its characters slowly inside out, and does it all w dialogue (2004)
-Godfather 1 and 2 - Epic classics with flawless performances (1972 and 1974)
-Goodfellas - black comedy / mob movie completely devoid of moralising, 2.5 hours feel like 30 min. (1990)
-Croupier - dark, quirky character study of a casino dealer who loves to watch his clients lose, and uses the material for a novel - great performance by Clive Owen (1999)

I wouldn't put all of these in top 5 films of all time, but these are 5 of my favourites.

I do not really have a top five that I can think of.

My favourite is Laputa (also known as Castle in the Sky), and after that I cannot really decide. Maybe Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump will be up there or some Korean movie like My Sassy Girl or some of those Disney classics like The Lion King, not sure since I watched many movies that I liked a lot.

Heh that was an AWESOME movie (and not just because of the lesb scene) - really made you think. Took me a lot of thinking and a second viewing to get that one (only time I"ve had to see a movie twice to totally get it).

Btw, Equilibrium (in your avatar) was fun to watch but like no one has heard of it.
