Three (four?) different stories that are all tangentally related. Think of it as a couple of short stories rather than a novel.

The timeline skips around, think Pulp Fiction.

You may also want to read the graphic novels, or wait for the extended version of the movie on DVD (which is supposed to contain the full version of each of the 3 stories).

I think Rodriguez had announced that there would be an uber deluxe edition out before xmas.. So it shouldn't be a suprise! ;) That's why I held off..

Seriously, in fact:

Same here, I'm holding my horses. Haven't purchased any of the Desperado trilogy either, knowing the inevitable triple set is coming.

Freeze frame any part of the movie and it looks like it was ripped right out of a comic book. It's the first movie that's attained that effect.

I knew there was a special edition coming out later, but I thought it was just extra features & stuff (which I rarely watch anyway). If I would have known that the special ed had extra content (i.e. director's cut), I wouldn't have purchased it. Not that I'm complaining; I got it at Walmart for $19 or so, but still.

Actually Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow, and Casshern were the first 2 movies to shoot completley green screen.

Sin City was not over hyped, it was stylistic. First movie to use comic book frames as a story board, and it was the first true movie to return to the film noir genre in a very long time.

When you also factor in Robert Rodrigez quit the directors guild just so Frank Miller could co direct it just shows how commited this team was to making the movie

Yup, and many movies before that.

It was hyped because of Miller's comic, the director and the great cast. Im sure there are many film noirs made, just not many popular ones. Max Payne really showed there was a market.
