I wonder about these things too. With such a large amount, would you accompany the buyer to futureshop during the purchase to make sure they are legit?

For the Buyer:

Simply ask the seller where he got it from.
If it was a returned item, ask to see the receipt that was printed out with
the store credit then both go into a FS store to have it verified by a cashier.
REMEMBER: giftcards amounts purchased via a stolen credit card can disappear
once the theft is discovered and purchases reversed or corrected.

For the seller:

Ask that both buyer and seller go to a bank machine together to withdraw funds
that will be used for payment. This will effectively eliminate the risk of accepting payment with counterfeit bills that is getting more and more common.

After this, good luck !

That's a little extreme.
If someone I was buying something from demanded we both go to my bank so he could watch my withdraw the money, I would tell him to shove it and he would lose me as a buyer.
What's next, managers of stores coming with us while we withdraw money to pay for stuff.

OP.

10% is by no means HOT.... a long shot would say mildly warm.

HOT is somewhere in the 30-45% range.

good luck.

very valid points. giving someone 900 bucks ACTUAL/verified...is entirely different when the item you're buying is 900 UNVERIFIED/POTENTIALLY VIRTUAL cash. buyer beware.

On that note, if OP can support this card. Then you're good to go :) Cheers.

The same reason that you would verifiy the contents of the giftcard are the same vaild reasons to ensure you aren't receiving counterfeit bucks from anyone

I purchases a FS giftcard yesterday for 702.00 and requested that the seller accompany me to an instant bank machine after verifying the GC and wait at the side of the kiosk. I then paid him for his GC . There is no way he can come back afterwards and say I passed any funny money to him .
REMEMBER 90.00 bucks is one thing to lose but 900.00 bucks is much different story.

Would you buy a card without verifying ? If the seller said shove it to verification, would you still buy ? HMMMMM / Works both ways.

I'd say the best way to make sure you aren't scammed, is that both the buyer and seller GO to futureshop together and either make the purchase together. That's the safest way possible.

There s/b a 1-800 on the back of the gift card you can call to verify the balance without going to a FS.

I agree. If i were a newbie seller with no feedback then it would be a different story because newbies need to build up their reputation to prove themselves trustworthy. As for the buyers, you'll notice a lot of newbies, especially older guys being more paranoid than the younger ones. If you still want to go through with the deal, perhaps you can say something like "add $10 service charge for meeting up at store and tagging along to the bank". :cheesygri

That is correct. And the balances are 100% accurate also, at least from my experience.

I think the GC is long gone.. he was going to call me before the weekend -- never heard from him.

Also there's no guarantee on the quality of the cash despite the source of the funds!
I bought an item last year.. I went to the bank machine, pulled out the cash and went and picked up the item... The guy wasn't too bright, so instead of calling me at the number I gave him, or the email address, he used call display and left me a message that apparently 2 of the bills had the same serial number! I got the message about a week late, called the bank and let them know what happened and they said that I could just come in and they would exchange the funds.
By the time I called the guy to make it right, he said he 'already handed the phony bills over to the cops'. out $40 bucks (the item was $560).

So you can never be too sure....

What are you doing bumping old threads from 4 months ago? And read the forum rules before you go thread bashing.
