i was actually able to pick up one of these before they were OOS, and i got it today. gonna charge the battery up tonight and test it out tomorrow. the only think i don't like is that it uses special batteries and not double A

The proprietary batteries are much better...they last forever. I use the R707 at work. The docking station gives you another battery (charge both at the same time too) and allows to quickly get the pictures onto the computer.

I got sick of charging the AA batteries on my previous Nikon camera.

Yeah. I've come to the same conclusion as davidY. I had an A80. While an excellent camera, and many people give the use of AA as a positive, I see it as a negative. Honestly, the AA's make the camera large. I currently also have a casio exilim which uses a proprietary battery and is a big reason why it is so small. To charge it, I throw it in the cradle and be done with it.

My A80 requires my NIMH's to be charged in a seperate charger, and if you don't have a smart charger, or you have a slow one, it's a pain in the butt. Sure, if you run out of batteries you can always go out and get some alkalines, but really, they will last you what, 10 pictures? If you get another set of NIMH's you are going to have to charge them anyway... just purchase yourself an extra battery if you are worried, but 150 some odd shots is good enough for me for now.

My Mom just bought this camera for 250 a few months ago. Also got the docking station & extra battery for $50.

I must say this is a really good camera even though I hate HP. They really cleaned up their act with this one. Fast power-on time, decent size, decent features, SD memory.

The only thing I don't like is the aspect ratio is not 4x6 so every picture you want to print you have to fiddle with or live with the default stretching & cropping. I have an old bulky 4mp that I would replace if not for that.

There are advantages and disadvantages of both.

Watta you gonna do if the proprietories batteries run out and you are not anywhere near a charging outlet?

Easy to run to ANY grocery store and buy some AA/AAA batteries or carry extra ones with you in emergencies.

If you get the docking station, you get a spare battery. Since the batteries are long lasting, you should be fine with a spare that is fully charged. I haven't confirmed how many shots before the battery runs dry....it's a long time between charges.

With AA, then you need several fully charged sets to keep up IMO.
