As the title states, I'm looking for a 60GB 7200rpm notebook hard drive. I know CanadaComputers sells it, but are there any other stores in the GTA that sell them?

well, you won't find much better prices than canadacomputers for notebook hds. they don't sell as quickly as regular 3.5" or opticals and most consumers don't like to install their own drives... that's why RFD's forums are fantastic; we'll share info on everything.

normally, i would tell you to purchase from a retailer just because it's a hassle to handle your own RMA. however, search for "Sunny_X" he has a 100GB w/ 2.5" enclosure for a great price. i've traded with him on high priced items in the past and he's dependable. great thing about his deal? you can throw your old drive into the enclosure and carry your divx with you. too bad you're not looking for a 5400rpm 40GB --> that i can help you with :)

NCIX has a Hitachi Travelstar (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=15693&vpn=08K0889%20(HTE726060M9AT00)&manufacture=Hitachi) for $193 plus GST ( No PST ) and only $5.99 shipping anywhere in Canada.

That's a really good price for a 100GB hard drive, but its 4200rpm :( I'm specifically looking for a 7200rpm notebook hard drive.

Hmmm...that's not a bad price. What's the service at NCIX like? I mean if I have any problems, are they nice people to deal with? It's only a couple of dollars more on savings, but NCIX provides a 3 yr warranty and CC only provides a 1 yr warranty (as if I'd want to deal with CC directly for warranty purposes  ).

There is no shortage of people on rfd that will vouch for NCIX myself included. I buy my pc stuff from them exclusively after RFD because you can pricematch almost any pc gear that they carry if you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

Have you thought of just using an external HD? If you have USB2 or FIREWIRE you can run off of that.

Currently I have an 80GB 4200rpm hard drive and I notice that its slow. My notebook is a Intel Centrino 1.6GHz with 1GB of ram and I've been told the reason my system is slow is because of the 4200rpm hard drive. Once I get a 7200rpm hard drive, I'll use the 80GB as external storage.

So can I price match the CC's price of $188 to their price of $193?

A notebook currently using a 4200 rpm drive will benefit a LOT from a 7200 one
My old 866 Crusoe notebook went from 51 second boot to 35 with the HDD swap.

Not to mention opening programs (esp large ones) was a lot faster).

In general, the entire experiance was that it was a lot snappier

It's going to be noisy and generate TONS of heat. I would not recommend it.

It's also going to speed up my system (which is bottlenecked becuase of the 4200rpm hard drive)

You'd be stuck w/ shipping costs and longer turn arounds w/ NCIX vs any local retailer which is something to consider.

You can get the 5400rpm drive for now, 7200rpm is for the future upgrade. I did upgrade my 4200 to a 5400, I honestly can not tell the improvement.

Are you saying that a that a 20% increase in spindle speed is not worth the investment and a 40% increase is??

Define "tons." I wouldn't touch a Hitachi with a ten foot pole, but as far as I know Seagate makes some very nice notebook drives.

Ok, now I'm considering either the 60GB 7200rpm or the 80GB 5400rpm with 16MB cache. Would the speed difference beteen those 2 be noticable? The 60GB will cost about $210 and the 80GB will cost about $140-160 (prices after taxes).

From everything I've heard, there's a substantial difference between 2MB and 8MB of cache, but not a lot between 8 and 16MB.

No, I would spend my upgrade money on RAM.
