I had iTunes for a while as well, but I didn't know how to use it so I went back to Winamp. I don't know how to make playlists, it seems to want to import all your songs, which I don't want.

I also had a problem with an MP3 player I bought, couldn't import the songs I want individually but had to import the entire albums

Try Ephpod.... seems like iTunes wants total control over all your files, which is not exactly a good thing if you're like me.

Huh? What's so hard about iTunes? It's a pretty good and easy to use piece of software if you ask me. Click on library, then drag and drop your songs. Right click a song -> Get Info to change tags. Not sure what you mean about how it wants to make playlists.

I think iTunes is made for people who don't know how to use computers :cheesygri We want to be able to use a 'drag and drop' file management since we can organize our mp3's ourselves, but apple likes to think differently.

I just got a shuffle and yes itunes suck,
the damn thing doesnt even support dragging and dropping files. I tried to drag a file from a local file on my drive and drag in into itune's library and it wouldn't do it. GRRR apple, got to type File > Import to library. then you have to find it in the library (which isn't hard with search)
another annoyance is
they got a great feature that lets you assign how much you like a song like 1 * to ***** and it plays more often the songs you like. Thing is once youve transfered your desired songs onto the Ipod you CANNOT assign your rating. grrr
man I hate apple, but the shuffle was free so meh Ill deal with these minor annoyances

iTunes is probablly the best program out there as long as you spend 5 minutes to learn how to use it!..YES u CAN drag and drop files to your library!..and YES you can rate songs AFTER they have been put on your ipod..you just cant do it on the shuffle because it doesnt have a screen!..thats like saying u cant put gas in a pedal bike..it doesnt have a gas tank!..and you dont know how to make a playlist!?..File-New Playlist..thats it..2 steps!.. i hate when people bash something because they dont have the patients to figure it out...end rant

I don't know about the rest of them, but most of my grievances lie with its faulty syncing algorithms, which when I had my 3G iPod, decided that around a third of my entire collection didn't deserve to be on my hard drive anymore, and henceforth deleted them without as much as asking me. I'm firmly convinced that it's not user error since I know as a fact that I'm not the only one that this has happened to.
Maybe they had some bugs when porting it over/rewriting it for windows, but since then I've made up my mind that iTunes should stay on the iFruit.

Well i have used my 3G ipod for over a year and been using a 4G for the past 3 months and iTunes has never deleted anything I havent told it to..afterall iTunes doesnt have a brain, it wont just delete your songs because its having a bad day or its on its rag. It only does what you tell it to do...

Hence my beef with its synchronization algorithms. It deemed some subdirectories out of sync, and not present on the iPod, so decided to clear them of their contents. All this from clicking Apple's oh-so-easy synchronize button (or whatever they call it).
I know that it was just a early bug since I got this error during iTunes' first few months of life, but the days upon days of retagging and renaming my collection from the iPod's jumbled archives made me never to trust iTunes again.
Anyhow, that's enough out of me. I'm sure iTunes works just fine now that the few of us had to suffer through their first missteps.

Well, yeah, I know how to drag and drop, and rate songs, and have iTunes pick out your most often played songs, your highest rating songs, stream music over the net, and use podcast. As for a playlist, yeah, you can make a playlist, but its not as easy to pick out individual songs that you want for your playlist like winamp. Dragging and dropping sucks, especially when you have your MP3 collection on different folders and CDs. I already have enough windows open on my desktop so I don't need a few extras just so I can add a few songs. It's already annoying when a folder takes up half the screen and I can't drop the songs into iTunes because the folder containing the music is covering the iTunes window. If I click on the iTune windows then, it wouldn't work cause I wouldn't be dragging and dropping. And I really don't feel like iTunes archiving my entire library of music because a) it takes a long time to scour the entire HD of 160GB, and b) there are just some songs that I don't listen to anymore so its just wasting my time by adding that to the playlist. Believe me, I've used iTunes for a few weeks and know how it works, and trust me, there are harder things in life that figureing out how to use iTunes, like flying a plane...
(That said, I must say that Mac OS X is better designed that Windows XP, especially the cascading windows and Dashboard)

Well I can only vouch that in the NEW iTunes, it can only delete to recycle bin, and it will ask you for confirmation. Also, in the NEW iTunes, it syncs your iPod to match your library in iTunes, not the other way around.
If drag and drop is too hard, then use the import folder option. iTunes will even grab stuff from subfolders when when adding files from either method; you can pretty much just drag your hard drive into iTunes and iTunes will grab everything and you can sort it out after. If you don't want to do that, drag your stuff to the task bar, let your mouse hover over iTunes, windows will then bring iTunes to the front, now drop.
How is it hard to fine individual songs to put on a playlist when there is this awesome search feature that pulls stuff up instantaneously? If everything is tagged right, use smart playlists. Smart playlists are awesome. I am still using winamp 2.95 so I have no idea how easy it is to make a playlist in the newer winamp.
To change ratings in iTunes, you can click the dots in the ratings column, or right click the song -> my rating (you have to do this to set 0 stars).
I really think iTunes is an excellent piece of software. I can't imagine managing my 10gb's of music without it.

I'm not a noob, i've used winamp back in the day, wmp, musicmatch, all of them. I really like itunes; although it is bloatware, and is a huge memory hog it is easy to use and has tons of features. Easy ripping, easy to manage files, ratings, sorting, etc. Playlists are great, if you can't figure out how to click file --> new playlist then you have some problems.
I don't use it for burning though, I save that for nero. And i've never had a problem synching with my ipod, it's never deleted songs or anything like that. I can't wait to see iTunes 5!

I can't imagine managing my 10gb's of music without it.
I manage 30+GB of music myself I don't need iTune's help, but I can see how iTune could have helped if it came out in 98 when I started my collection.
I find iTune too cumbersome to use. I use it to transfer my music to ipod that's about it. Nothing else. I use winamp for listening to mp3.

As far as importing. Go into preferences first to choose what format you want to import in (ACC or Mp3 and what quality). You only have to do that once. Then put the cd in and click the import button at the top right. that's it. To create a playlist, click the + button near the bottom left underneath the playlist window. Name your playlist and drag your songs over. You can also set itunes to only list your songs but not manage them. iTunes is set by default to copy all your current mp3s and rename them and place them into folders in its itunes folder. This can mean you have two copies of the same song. I go into preferences, then advanced and uncheck "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" and "Copy Files To The iTunes Music Folder when adding to the Library". I already have an external drive with folders with my music. When I drag those folders to iTunes, the songs stay where they are but iTunes now lists them for me. Its easier to search and play through itunes then navigating folders but it doesn't touch my folder hierarchy.
