What brand and model is it?
Not sure if this will work for you, but try taking the battery out for 10 minutes, put it back in, and try powering it up again.

its the ibm thinkpad, i've been running a lot of test on my broken hard drive, its having problems, i was reinstalling the O/S and then it just shut off, and now, as soon as i turn the laptop on, it turns off in like 3 secs.

oh, and i nevered opened a laptop before, is it hard to install the hard drive. And do i have to buy a specific brand of hard drive fro my laptop?

as you already said, I can't see the hard drive causing this problem.
try ensuring that the ram is seated properly. strange as it may sound but it can happen.
you could also take the battery out and try using the laptop without the battery, just the AC adapter.

to eliminate possible causes one by one, verify:
1) is there a CD/DVD in the drive ? take it out.
2) is the battery low on power ? try power on without battery and run on AC like goofball suggested.
3) try disconnecting the hard drive. the laptop should at least boot up to the BIOS screen.
just some suggestions :|
