New comp problem, starts then shutsdown

Alright so I put together a new box, I think I have everything hooked up correctly. When I press the power button the fans and everything will start going for a second and shutsdown by itself. I don't have a slightest clue what the problem might be, both the cpu fan and this extra fan I added are spinning, Its running 1 hd + 1 cd on a 400W so power shouldn't be the problem. Also when I started it, a light on the mobo came on signaling that its on and it goes off when the comp shutsdown by itself. Any ideas ?

Sounds like something's shorting out the mobo. Take it out of the case and try it. It will also shutdown if the heatsink isn't installed correctly.

Hi there...any beeps? Video? Re-check all your connections. Re-grease your CPU. You might also want to list your hardware specs.

yep, try reseating your heatsink. this does sound characteristic of a fried cpu though. but it can also just be the psu. if the problem persists, start with a barebones setup (cpu, 1 stick of ram, mobo, psu, video. no expansion cards, hdd or opticals) and begin hardware troubleshooting. It's just a process of elimination troubleshooting one component at a time.

After reseating the HSF, try reapplying thermal paste.
- Then swap the psu.
- Try a different stick of ram.
- Try installing ram in a different dimm slot.
- Try swapping videocards, though this step is virtually unnecessary, it's good to be sure.
- Finally, swap the cpu out and test it in another system. (always swap cpu's out, never in - because if the mobo is the problem, it can potentially fry any good cpus you put in there).

If all is fine after troubleshooting each component, you can conclude that your motherboard is the culprit. It could have short circuited somehow, a capacitor could have broken off - anything.

Hmmm ok well the mobo is DFI 865gv-mlv, it has onboard video so I don't need a vid card, theres no agp slot anyways. No beeping, I've checked all the connections and everything is secure, I don't think I shorted it caz I didn't see any sparks or smokes... I've seen a video of what happens when you take off the cpu heatsink/fan while its running, its the amd vs intel video some of you might have seen it before as well, anyways what that happened, the chip totally melted and I don't think my chip did ( I'll check later on ).

What does taking it out of the case have to do with anything ?

- I don't have an extra PSU so, well I do have a old desktop maybe I could try that.
- Also no thermal paste so thats out.
- The comp I'm running right now is amd and not intel so can't test the cpu
- Will try the 2 ram ideas.
- Using Samsung 512 DDR 3200 for ram.

I am pretty confident that you have a bad memory. Do memtest86 to see if you get any errors. If you do, RMA it right away.

Modern CPUs shut themselves down if the heat rises past a certain level. That maybe what you're experiencing.

If the mobo is in direct contact with the case or if there's a loose screw touching it, it will short out and not boot. You will not see a spark or smoke if this happens.

Do not attempt to reseat/remove HSF without Thermal Paste. (AMD _ESPECIALLY_)

Well when I meant no thermal paste, I mean theres no more thermal paste left except for whats on the cpu.

I understand that but I JUST started up the comp so its no where near hot.

Well I have it sitting on a bunch of screws and it is screwed in. So if say this is what happened, is the mobo messed up or will it work if I take it out of the case and try it ? I highly doubt this is it tho.
