Chamberlain, $349 at Home Depot. Good luck finding a belt driven for $200, perhaps a garage sale! I remember these guys offering 'free install" Not sure if thats still on?

would a chain driven garage door opener be any cheaper?

Yes it would, chain driven are a little louder, with belt driven you pay a little premium for the reduction in noise.

only chain drives at that price - but chain drives are just as good, only louder. if you can install yourself you can save about $90.

Had a Chamberlain belt-drive 1/2 hp garage door opener installed through Home Depot on the weekend. The opener was $289 and they had a promotion running where the normal $120 installation charge was reduced to $75. If you get installation done through Home Depot, you don't pay the 7% GST on both the installation and the opener. It worked out to $390 taxes in & installed.

The opener comes with 2 remotes and the control console , but doesn't have the wireless keypad. It also comes with a lifetime warranty on the unit & belt.

including installation?

I installed myself, with a buddy of mine.... don't bother paying for the install.... do it yourself. It isn't hard. The instructions were pretty verbose. The toughest part is just making sure everything is lined up and solid (to eliminate rattling).

ps... anyone seen the original poster? :D

I just had a belt driven garage door installed last week and you could find the cheapest is $199+tax+install costs.

I bought one that was on special at Home depot it was a Chamberlain power series with infrared sensor and touchpad access just in case you forgot to bring a set of keys you can open the garage from a num panel outside the house.

I got the deal for $229+75 install + tax it came to $343. This is the best deal available and I looked all over BC.

The Chamberlain Power Drive series are chain-driven openers, not belt-driven. The belt-driven openers are the Whisper Drive series.

I am looking for a garage door opener for a two car garage that has one big door, and the door is insulated. Is a 1/2 HP opener adequate? I would think that it is more than adequate, but I have neve owned one, so I don't know.

The Sears promotion is good online until January of 2006, so if I can't find a better deal before then, I guess I am getting one of them!

I wish I had known about the Home Depot sale last week, or whenever it was . . .

Does anyone else know of sales on openers?

Yes... it would be "adequate" but not necessarily recommended. I have a 1/2hp on my single door. I'd suggest getting a 3/4hp for your double.

Ouch, that is going to cost a heck of a lot more, isn't it? Sears doesn't have any on sale, or even have any more powerful than a 1/2 HP. I better research this!

Sears does have a 3/4 HP model - I just bought one a few weeks ago. It's a chain drive 3/4 HP and came with the keypad as well as two remotes. It was regularly priced at $400 but it was on sale for $250. A 1/2 HP model is certainly sufficient for a double insulated door (that's what I have), but when they had the 3/4 on sale for the same price as the comparable 1/2 HP model I went for the additional power. One other thing that I should mention is that although the belt drive is quieter than the chain, the 3/4 HP chain drive is quieter than the 1/2 chain. Also, keep in mind that although my chain drive is louder than the belt drive, the garage door opening is louder than the motor on the opener.

Good point here..... be sure to use some type of lubricant on the door to reduce squeaks and squaks.

sears had a 3/4hp belt drive fro 399.99 on the week-end (reg 499.99)
plus they have sratch and save on top.
comes with remote keypad, and also some thing that lets u know of the door is opened or closed from inside the house (reg 60 i think)

you can also buy the buy the craftsmen club, it a booklet with coupons for $25.00+tax. There's a 10% off garage door openers coupon in there which can be used along with the sratch and save.

I got mine from HD - Cost installed $300 - remember you only pay GST if you have it installed....

My suggestion is also to make friends with someone in HD  ...seriously.....they don't bite... they will let you know when there are special friends and family appreciation days....one guy even gave me his family discount coupon.... got 25% OFF everything that day!

Very good advice, thanks guys!

I will definately lubricate the door, and I will look into a 3/4 HP opener. It sounds like I can get away with a 1/2 HP opener, though.
