I had Bubble Tea for the first ime Tuesday.
I kept thinking it was globs of snot coming up the straw.

Every time I thought I was gonna get a whole mouthful of refreshing flavoured tea, a few of these phlegm balls popped into my mouth.

Effing Gross.

Those balls are called Tapioca.

You can opt not to have them next time. It'll be straight tea then.

as previously mentioned, you can opt not to have tapioca. There is also the option of having lychee bits or some others instead of tapioca.

Just to let you know..you can have it without the Tapicoa or you can sub. it for some jelly or cereal(if available)..I tend to think about the tapicoa as soft gummi bears or whatever soft candy. Take care...

the bubbles in bubble teas are mainly supplied from china now, so eat at your own risk.

yep- bubble tea with tapioca balls is awful. Expensive too- over $3.

Sometimes when I see non-Asians checking out the bubble tea- I feel like telling them- save your money, it tastes bad.

Go for juice or milkshakes.

Expensive? That's why you get those take-out cards that let you get a free one every for every 9 stamps. I get jumbos everytime and it owns hard because I get the best flavour - Taro.

It works out to 20 cents an ounce.

I did the calculations.

It had a good run and the bubble tea then was actually better than alot of bubble tea shops (or so i'm told) for almost a year then it declined. Mind you though, the product is geared towards the mainstream market and not so much the asian which is the right way of going at it. And they do use real chinese leaves, I've seen the leaves they used when I was inside the store.

Imagine on suckin on something a little wider than usual and u suck and suck until something hits the back of your throat and you gag on it.

Didnt like the gag reflex the first time, but the second time was a little easier to swallow.

Onto bubble tea! That "tapioca" stuff what is that, is that a plant, flour or stuff made from "general tsao's chicken" (rat meat??)

Tapioca - A starchy substance derived from the root of the "cassava plant" that is used as a thickening agent for soups, fruit fillings, and desserts. Used much like cornstarch.

Ok,
interesting thread...

What is the "jelly" used in the bubble tea made from?
The place I go to had jelly and they buy it in these plastic containers that have chinese writing on it.

I usually have the lychee jelly, but last time had some that was mango and haped like stars.

Just wondering wtf and I eating?
The tapioca is ok, not very flavourful where I go .

Anyone know, since Urkel don't read real good Chinese?
Thanks...

I think it's mad of Conjac also known as konjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or glucomannan. Same stuff those jelly cups are made of that you find in Asian markets. It has the consistency as Lychees.

Even with your referenced news report, it may not be reflective of all distributors in the GVA. If not manufacturered here, I do know that most imported supplies are from Taiwan. Only the odd are from China.

It's been mentioned you can have no balls, but you can also request just a little bit of balls.

I usually get just a little bit of the lychee ones. But I'm not obsessed as some other people are.

See here is an example where "ignorance is NOT bliss".

1st of all to all the non Asian people on here;
you are NOT supposed to swallow the tapioca balls! They are meant to be chewed, tasted, and THEN swallowed. Tapioca bubbles are basically something you chew with your teeth! Not something you simply just swallow! Dang!

2nd, no tapioca is not made out of rat meat or whatever! it is derived from the Cassava root. I do hope most of you know what Cassava is... we have it in Vietnam, Thailand, the Phillipines, and other SOuth East Asian places.

3rd of all i find the lychee bits or coconut shreds tend to taste repetitive after awhile. its okay at first but, it gets really annoying chewing on them during the whole drink.

anyhow, here are my favourite bubble tea drinks

= the coffee one taste very strong and good ( i think they use Vietnamese mountain coffee and condensed milk?), for all the South East Asians and Caribbean people (Trini !;) try the SOURSOP bubble Tea its good too.

Mango bubble tea is alright, Green tea flavour is also alright, lychee, and theres a whole lot more i forget.

Anyways i'm new to this board and i really enjoy Vietnamese (my background!) food, Guyanese food, Jamaican food, Trini food, Chinese food, Thai food, and much more.

had to edit.
