You need to keep three car lengths behind the car in front of you.

Why did he go into a dead stop? Was it a yellow light turning red?

Uh, from my understanding..ABS..will acctually take longer to stop, because it allows u to steer somewhat (it like rapidly pulsates) well if its all 4..u can steer..rear abs like prevents rear spin outs..so the abs lets it go strait..u need to like press hard on the brakes to activate it..
Unless I'm wrong it wouldnt be the ABS part :p brakes maybe..but not the ABS system :p
Super strokey

Wrong
In dry and wet pavement, stopping distances are always shorter with ABS compared to threshold or full lock.

You might think that optimal braking is implemented by completely locking all the wheels. No, law of physics tells us that the coefficient of friction between the ground surface and a static object is always greater than a moving object. If the tyres are sliding on the road surface, the friction between road and wheel will not be maximum. Therefore, the maximum braking occurs when the wheels are braked up to the level that the wheels just do not slide.
To ensure the shortest stopping distance, ABS applies intermittent braking in very high frequency. This avoid complete lock up of wheels, thus gives the name "Anti-Lock Braking System".
Another advantage of ABS is letting the driver to keep controlling the car during braking. Before ABS appeared, cars lock up during braking, thus unable to be steered to avoid collision. With ABS, while slowing down the car, the driver can simultaneously try to steer away from the obstacle in front.
To implement anti-lock braking, ABS system employs speed sensors for individual wheels. If the wheel speed detected differs from the vehicle speed, that means the wheel is sliding, thus the computer will signal the corresponding brake to loose until sliding disappear. The computer will also compare the speed of all wheels, if one or more of them run considerably faster than others, that means the car is losing control, it will apply more brake to that wheel to correct the driving path.

Hmm..I geuss thinking back to even the news they did say can lenghten distance..I geuss it causes less skidding/sliding an more traction to help stop..
Edit: Hah, yea, just read it now in the ^ post.

In the past, maybe yes. But modern ABS has improved a lot.

ABS is for women drivers. I don't care how sexist this comment sounds.
Taking away control of the car from the driver and expecting a preset to know what will be best for you in the situation is insane. Unless you are a horrible driver or completely reactionary ABS is a pain in the ass. I will go so far as to suggest it is dangerous for anyone who grew up driving normally and has the muscle memory to threshold break because in an emergency they will not stomp on the break and simply hope for the best.
I contend that ABS manufacturers probably funded the studies cited and that we have no idea whose 'best effort' was used.

So tell me J1M, you can control 4 individual breaks all at the same time?
Don't you ever stop being a troll?

Are you kidding? I bet he is able to pump his brakes a few hundred times during a those 2 seconds during an emergency stop and his brain is fully functional calculating Pi.
ABS is great. Anyone that thinks it is a waste of time doesn't understand how it works.

Whatever dude...go ahead and continue living in your dream world. You have NO idea what you are talking about. And obviously NO real world experience to back up your claims.
When a study goes against one's own opinion, it's such a weak argument to suggest that manufacturers funded the report in their favour. Completely weak.
