It's all subjective I guess. I eat chicken feet, but I don't like eating any type of roe (cod, salmon, flying fish, etc.). I used to...but then the thought of having a thousand eggs in one bite, when they could've all been little fishes...that got to me.
Many cultures have things that other cultures may find disgusting...foie gras, sweetbreads, oysters, or even escargots can be seen as disgusting for other cultures.

Visualization and texture are the 2 major reasons why people dislike a certain kind of food. I started eating chicken feet before I even knew what it was when I was kid. :D It's smooth sailing aftewards.
There isn't much that I don't eat due to my imagination/visualization. But texture and smells sometimes get me

Some folks just have trouble eating something so readily identifiable.
Meatloaf, steaks and burgers don't really look like a cow and a pork chop or bacon doesn't look like a pig. Chicken feet look like .. well, they look like chicken feet.
The mental disconnect some people need to be meat eaters just ain't there. Too much "Ew factor".

The chicken will be dead regardless, so I don't think it will matter to it.
But, will it be more comforting for you to know the feet were wasted in the garbage instead for feeding someone?

Not all Asian people eat chicken feet, or fish heads, or puppies!!!!
Frankly, I think the reason that chicken feet, intestines, fish heads, etc. make up a small part of Asian cuisine is due to poverty. Everybody knows, including Asians, that these are less desireable parts of the animal. No matter where you go, chicken feet is much much cheaper than chicken breast. So poor people buy the chicken feet and make the best of it. The same applies in poor areas anywhere. For example, poor predominantly black communities in the US eat pigs feet, chitlins, etc.

bones and lack of meat. I agree that the actual look of the foot creeps out alot of people.
Regarding what the inside of a chicken coop looks like... They peel off an outer epidermis when preparing chicken feet -- and they do wash the product.

I believe the practise of eating chicken feet did arise from the need not to waste food, any .... 'food'
Now, I agree it is the visuality of chicken feet that makes them 'hard to swallow' ... but think about where chicken feet and other unserved parts end up anyway. They are ground up and fed to poultry and livestock, effectively making chickens (amongst others such as cattle) cannibals. They even feed chicken litter to cattle, and cattle wastes to chickens.
To me that's a more disturbing picture.
Oh .. ever wonder where they get star-shaped chicken nuggets from and what they're made of?

By ass, do you mean tail? Because they are different.
Chicken feet taste good (in the forms that I've had them in), they have a different taste from fat and muscle, great with with certain sauce. They're also priced the same as other dim sum in restruants.
Chicken wing's tip has more bone and and can be easily identified as a part of a chicken, everyone still likes them...

Personally I think the Chicken Feet look gross...
But I think that in North Amercia the equivalent would be Chicken Wings..wich I think look just as gross and also have no meat on them!
(I don't eat chicken wings either).
Also, just as gross looking is cows tongue.
My dad used to buy it when I was a kid and I'd come home and see this shrink wrapped styrofoam tray in the fridge with a huge cow's tongue on it.
You are supposed to grill that and eat it...supposed to be very good I hear.

You mean the Pope's Nose.
Chicken feet are scalded and the outer skin layer is removed. Very clean and then they are cooked. Very glutinous. My parent used to make them (Quebeckers)...I was never into these thing as I am part of the newer generation.
During the depression I bet they were very good.
Today we generally associate them with Asians who eat many parts of an animal and other species that many of us find uneatable.
If I had no other choice ..I would gladly eat them to stay alive.
I love chicken livers...gizzards...hearts....esp. chicken livers.
The idea of eating snake....tripe...eel...frogs legs doesnt appeal to me.
My fave is chicken ribs.....but man it takes a whole bunch and a long time to eat them :cheesygri

I believe the rest of the chicken and not just their feet are in chicken coops as well. So do you not buy chicken with the skin on it? It's not like they're not washed with the rest of the chicken...
I'm guessing it's something based more on appearance rather than a realistic concern for hygiene. If you've ever had roasted chicken or duck from Chinese BBQ restaurants, did you know those birds are cooked and cut up with their rears?

I love 'em, and I'm not Chinese.
Actually, lots of cultures eat them. I'm Eastern European and my folks were very familiar with them. I also have a distant relative of my Wife who is Mexican and we have actually shared a big bowl of chicken feet together.
It seems be a thing against cartilage. My wife can't stand them, not because they're feet, but because she doesn't like cartilage. (she's one of these people that just picks at the meat of a chicken and leaves so much behind, there's plenty left for me. :) )
Now, if you want to talk about really nasty sounding foods:
(and I have eaten all of this stuff and have lived to tell the tale)
1. Fish heads
2. Tripe (that that's nasty!)
3. Blood Sausage. (YUM!)
4. Haggis (Also YUM!)
5. Duck's Blood Soup.
My point is, it's not just a Chinese thing.

I've been to my Jamaican friends house and they had jerk chicken feet. it was very good. They also cooked curry goat a few times, goat head soup at the big events (also known as Mannish water). Cow foot soup too.
My Guyanese peoples eat chicken feet, pig tail-cowfoot in their pepperpot, and of course cook up rice.
I am Vietnamese and dated a Guyanese girl for a while so, i know.
Us Vietnamese basically eat the same things Caribbean people eat but, we cook em differently. WE fry less and steam more or lightly fry.
here's some Viet food= Curry Chicken w/cassava, tripe, oxtail either curried for rice/bread or steam stewed for noodles(rice noodles), cow foot soup (different from Caribbean peoples though), chicken feet in chilie hot sauce and soy sauce, bok choy, bitter melons, okra w/beef, gingered king fish or snapper, salt fish w/garlic and onions, um..... springrolls and noodles, theres so much more. Oh yeah Vietnamese banana fritters ( i think we got this from the Flips).

but only for dimsum and in restaurants. I wouldn't eat those in the plastic tubs you find for sale in the oriental supermarkets; they always look like they've been there forever! Chicken feet, for anyone who has ever killed their own chicken, is covered with a yellow layer of ?? - we call them socks. You dunk the feet into boiling water, then strip off this layer, so they are quite clean.
Then again, I don't eat tripe ....

All you people who think its gross ( I don't eat them but I did when I was a kid, i don't like the red sauce ) What do you think chicken "hot dogs" are made out of? They aren't going to grind up some premium chicken breast for you. They probrably use chicken ass, chicken feet, chicken neck, and anything else you wouldn't dream of eating.

Personally, I find it quite delicious; I order any of the various types it's cooked when I go out for dim sum.
It's a matter of preference on whether you like it or not, but we always have to keep an open mind about other cultures. Sayign that it's disgusting and that you should not be associated with people who eat such things are quite naive and asinine. There are other dishes that prove to be delicacies in some cultures but are then again viewed as disgusting by others. In North America for instance, McDonald's and other fast food chains are looked as a staple or a treat while in other cultures it is just viewed as disgusting. My point is just to keep an open mind and try things before you make irrational comments.
Not all Chinese people eat puppies, hell they don't even eat puppies. In northern parts of China where protein is scarce, Chinese people eat special breeds of dog to get their protein; also it's often the lower classes who cannot afford pork or beef that eat dog meat.

oxtail is actually cow tail. most "oxtail" you find in a Caribbean restaurant or Asian eatery is actually cow tail.
I don't know why people in general call it oxtail. its really cowtail. honestly.
oxtail is good though, i mean cowtail?

I had done my best over the years to forget the gory details....just when I get out...they pull me back in. :cheesygri
Chicken ass=popes nose....sounds better.
Chicken necks are quite good....just a bit tedius to eat... tender...good flavour.
The probably use a lot of dark meat.
Think about it...most of the chicken is useable....and good. They dont use anywhere near what beef dogs might have....or bologna.
Dont know if they would use the liver...different flavour.

It's all psychological. You may think it's gross, but what about sausages, huh?
Sausages are made from miscellaneous meat that is wrapped inside intestine. Last time I checked, bodily waste flowed through the intestine...
Um, so yeah, shouldn't sausages be "ewww" too...?

I think of when they're on farm and those feet stepping on all the chicken crap and stuff. Plus I don't like the jelly like texture of it either....

My grandmother (caucasian) lived all her life in Ohio, and ate chicken feet as well as the soup. You wash them reaally good and then strip the orangey, yellow layer of hide off and then you have tasty tidbits of meat. It is like headcheese. Lots of work but good! :) Kasie

Would't one eat almost any other part of the Chicken before they would consider the feet? Breast, Leg, Thigh, Back, Ass, etc.
What poor peasant started this?

has this thread inspired anyone to go and try some chicken feet/Phenoix claws? I only like the phenoix claws because of the sauce, can't imagine eating the feet without it. Don't be dusgusted by it, it's actually quite good.

LOL poor u!
On the other hand chicken feet in the red sauce is so yummy.. and when you prepare it, you have to cut off the toenails and peel off the outer layer of the skin! The cooked result does not look as bad as some ppl have described them as.
This thread made me want to go dim sum tmr and order some!
