also you wont be charged any duty on it right?
and the charger is no use right? cuz of the design of the prongs

V600/V400/T637/nokia 3650
These models are probably considered antiques in Shang Hai. I doubt you will be able to find them new.
Why not wait til you get back to Canada and pick one up?
You can get these phones for <$100.

AFAIK, phones in mainland China are not that cheap. First, they are sold without contract, so there's no carrier discount on them. Second, in my experience, brand-name electronics there aren't that cheap in general.

V3 is 4999 here without the haggling, which won't be big unless you buy 2 or 3 or more.
Exchange rate is around 6 and a half now.

V3 for 4999 is about what I'd expect. That's over $700 CAD.
As I mentioned, phones in China have no carrier discount. When you get a phone with Rogers/Telus/Bell on contract, they're selling the phone at a loss. Cell phones aren't that cheap in general to make. North Americans are just used to huge carrier subsidies.
Even though almost everyone in Chinese cities has a phone, most of their phones are worse than what we have here. The phones that are better than what we have are considered luxuries. Yes, the large population means there's enough rich people to create a big market for luxury phones, but their pricing reflects the luxury status.
In my experience, markups on brand-name electronics or anything considered upscale are higher in China than Canada. Things are cheap for ordinary consumer goods and anything that's a labour service. Brand name goods with a worldwide market...not so much.
On the other hand, Chinese-brand cell phones (Bird, Haier, ZTE, etc.) are a lot cheaper. Most of them don't work in North America though. And the best part is the much greater selection there.

I'm in Shanghai right now and I have to agree with everyone else here. It's not that cheap but there's phones here that you can't get yet in Canada. Unless you want a cutting-edge phone, just buy one in Canada.
If you do decide to get a phone, tell your friend to stick it in the check-in luggage. I bring expensive electronics and alcohol all the time this way and I never pay any duties or taxes. Yes, it's illegal. . .
Also, be careful not to buy a fake phone. They may have brand name housing but it's crap inside. Be sure to buy from a large reputable dealer.
