Seriously
They should just use one shuttle for a reduced mission list, scrap the rest, and get the new fleet ready sooner.

I disagree with that. Probably the only thing that has contributed more to scientific development than space exploration is weapons development.
It also promotes ridiculous amounts of national pride (something that is sorely lacking in this country).

I concur. A more cataclysmic take on it is that it may eventually save the human race.
