I'm 16. Azn. And.. Comming from azn decent I am required to make something big from myself. Right now my goal is to become a doctor, doing well (85-90%) in sciences but not soo hot in math (70%). I am a huge ass techy and started my own business at the age of 15. (Goal of that company was to get myself a new computer! Haha I AM SOO TECHY!) Business went well. Made more than 3000CAD in less than 2 months. Had 8 employees paid $9USD/hour. And sold my company for another $2000 (he ran it into the ground within a month). I purchased my computer, lived like a king for about 3 weeks. Than money was low. (down to about $1000) Scammed our of $310 on a cell phone trade on hofo. (down to about $690) I keep updated with cell phones and computers. I love science though. I don't know if its just a phase I'm going through but I really don't know what to do.

You are doing better than most at your age. Keep it up?
Don't become a doctor (medical, I assume) unless you truly enjoy it.

wow impressive man
sounds like you would be better as an entrepeneur, being a doctor can be limited by govn't salaries unless you become a private one. but theres always a need for doctors in this world.
go with your gut feeling and give a prayer to God for some guidance.

Except this was @ age 19 :O u did it all @ 15 son. now thats an acomplishment! keep it up.. you seem like u have the entrapreneur spirit.

Go for your Comp. Eng. at UToronto then get your P.Eng. - that's my plan. O yea, I'm 15 with a company (Peter R Browne Technology Consultant Services) and business is slow ($700/month - cost of business (around $50 profit))
Any suggestions? I have business cards from VistaPrint

well what these are the only things that you need to figure out.
a) What are you selling?
b) Where are you selling?
c) Where are you getting the product from?
d) How are you selling it?
e) What can you cut down on?
f) Get buyer feedback. Sometimes they are a big help on marketing and methods of getting yourself known and referred too.
g) if i think of more i'll tell you;)

technology consulting and computer repair
b) Where are you selling?
Whereever people can meet me
c) Where are you getting the product from?
d) How are you selling it?
whenever people are talking about computers i drop a business card near one of them and walk away, i also get business from referrals.
e) What can you cut down on?
ummm... nothing - I am using office space of a family member, my laptop is my computer (i have no desktop).... wellll... maybe i don't need to go to quiznos daily (maybe replace it with a salad from dominion)
f) Get buyer feedback. Sometimes they are a big help on marketing and methods of getting yourself known and referred too.
g) if i think of more i'll tell you;)

Michael Dell was an average joe who started a tiny, tiny business from his garage. Dell is now the biggest company out there in terms of computer sales. If Michael Dell is still alive, he's a billionaire.
You seem to have those same business smarts. Do what he did. Start your own business. Your income will only be limited by you, nobody else.
Doctor is a good job, but there is too much school, the hours are long, the job is stressful and you're basically on call 24/7. As a doctor, you don't make the decisions, someone else does.
I'd say start your own business!

Go out and volunteer like nuts. Try everything. It leads to a lot of fun and rewarding times with lots of great people.
I'm just like you. Typical Chinese kid, I wanted to impress my parents with working hard and making big bucks. I love tech stuff and anything to do with computers. I ran a hosting company with a buddy for a while to pay for a comp. Bought a comp and we both ditched the company.
I volunteered all over the place to try and get a feel for different occupations becuase I really wanted to figure out what I liked. This summer I flew back to Shanghai to visit family and the great opportunity of teaching English to high school students. I get paid 200 yuan/hour (around $32 CAD, I think) and I absolutely love it. I love interacting with people and everyday, every student brings something different.
Before I wanted to be a lawyer, doctor or a programmer. Now, I'm seriously looking into becoming a teacher.
I'm just trying to say that you should go out and try new things. I know it's cliche, but it's true. As teens, most of us have a fair amount of spare time, so why not?

I am in the same boat, trying to choose between what I like to do and what earn the most dollar. I am not sure if being a doctor is what I want to do, or invent some new electronics or study physics and discover the unified theory :cheesygri

They don't actually allow volunteers to bathe patients, that's the nurse's job. Most of the duty involves talking to and entertaining the patients.

Being a doctor is a tough tough job. I have 2 very close friends that became doctors and since they have become somewhat emotionally unstable.
Everyday you are faced with the sick, weak and depressed. Saving people is great but what about when you can't? How do you tell a patient he has cancer and has 2 months to live?
If you want to be a doctor because of the money and status - dont do it.

Agreed. Being a doctor is not for everyone. I have a lot of asian friends in medical school with me whose parents all expected them to be doctors. For the majority of them, it's not what they want to do, but it's too late to do anything about it now. To the OP, following your parents' wishes is fine, but only listen to yourself when it comes to your future. It's your life, not theirs.

I have to agree with most of the posters here. Whatever work you do, you better make sure you enjoy it because you'll be doing it for a long time (I've been at my same job for the same employer for 21 years, and I still love it and wouldn't want to change anything even though many people my age are better paid); you'll be working when you're happy and when you're stressed, when you're healthy and when you're a bit sick, when you're trouble-free and when you have big problems at home or in the family. Make sure you love what you're doing.
The money is secondary; most professionals earn more than enough money to be happy. Money (and parents) should not be a factor in any career decisions.

Don't become a doctor. I would go with what everyone else said and start your own business. Either think big, or something small that can grow to be big.

Very impressive, with accomplishments like that you shouldn't have to worry too much about your future. I say just go with the flow and wait for opportunities to open up. Always stive to improve and learn as much as you can and they will come. Most importantly, do something you enjoy...
