I was skeptical at first, but I finally decided to try generic ink cartridges. I placed an order at http//www.blankdvdmedia.com for a set of R300 ink cartridges for the price of $44.99 CAD and I have to say they work great! I no longer have to empty my pockets for ink (I print a lot with my R300).

They also have a great deal on:

100 Ridata 8x inkjet printable to hub DVD's
1 set of ink for R200/R300
100 sheets of glossy photo paper
and 100 single dvd cases

for $149.99.

I havn't tried their photo paper, but it sounds like a great deal to me. Especially if you like to make your own movies.......or backup your DVD's.

Yeah for cheap ink! :)

If everything turns out kosher, post and let people know.

I used to order these cartridges for my parents in newfoundland and shipping typically took two weeks max, even though their site says 4-6 for outside USA. Mom and dad just got a new brother MFC though (replacing the xerox, after like 5 years it finally died, i think the print heads were dead, colors woudnt print at all, and black would typically print for a bit and then fade away) If anyone has a Xerox Printer (M750, or one that uses the same cartridges) i have a bunch of cartridges I ordered just before the printer died which i'll dump on you for cheap, PM me.

Edit: I'll also add that i did clean the print head with paper towl with hot water on it, and let the ink drain out (as described in the manual) but to no avail.

As someone just posted, it turns out the site exit pop up is only 10% off. So they eithere changed it, or my memory sucks. The 20% off code i pulled from their newsletter (the previous link i posted). When you order, if you have the opertunity to opt out of their newsletter (i'm not sure if you do) dont bother. There isnt any spam, and i generally receive one email a month, allways with a coupon for 20% and usually a free item with order. Photo paper, 10pack of CDR's etc.

I've ordered from this site 4-5 times on behalf of my parents and so far no complaints.

Sounds like your doing an extra unecessairy step there. When you click the link, you should be able to browse the site normally Then add to your basket what you want, once you add something to your basket the right side bar will change to your order basket and should display the coupon discount & the free item. No extra copy of the site has to be opened (at least not here) for it to work properly.

They appear to sell different inks... abcink mentioned G&G Ink in their FAQ, while 77colors ships colorlabs ink. Their may or may not be a difference in quality but its worth mentioning that color labs is a north/south amercain company while G&G is based soley out of china. Your milage may vary.

BEWARE:

Use at your own risk.

I own an Epson R200

77colors.com - 3 Black and 1 each of the 5 colour cartridges cost $69.85, less 20% coupon = $55.88US

Blankdvdmedia - 3 Black and 1 each of the 5 colour cartridges cost $58.77 CDN + GST = $59.79 (no PST outside PQ)

Both have free shipping.

In my case, it looks like blankdvdmedia is the better option as once you convert currency into CDN for 77colors, it will cost more, plus you also run the risk of border charges.

I dunno about other printers but for the epson r200/r300 I would highly recommend looking for ink on ebay.

For my R200 I was able to get two full ink sets (6 carts each set I think) and it came up to just a hair under $50 ($48 something I think) shipping included.

I'm just switched to the first set about a week ago and so far it's working great. There were a ton of people on ebay selling ink, lots of deals to be had.

My concern with buying from Ebay is you have no idea what the quality of the ink is and you may have difficulties trying to return it. Especially if you buy a couple of sets of ink and don't even try them until 6 months later. Plus many people require Paypal, which I am not a fan of.

Indeed. With paypal you have nearly no protection. For example, if someone sends you something with delivery confirmation but you receive a box of rocks in the mail, paypal won't give your money back, AND paypal reserves the right to send a collection agency after YOU if YOU exercise your legal right to call the Credit Card company to charge it back from paypal.

Well, I haven't had anything but good success with Ebay, so I prefer that route...its WAY cheaper...

I found this one ebayer, who lives in Richmond Hill, ships to me in under 48hrs and I got a 9 pack for my Epson CX6400, (3 Hi Capacity Black, 2 Cyan, 2 Magenta, 2 Yellow) for $34.95USD + $6.95 Shipping

great deal.

Compare that to the blankdvdmedia site quoted at the start, that same order is $91.39 CAD... plus slower shipping..

Wouldn't an ebayer invested and wanting to sell ink be concerned about a negative review saying, Received Rocks!??

I know I check the sellers reviews. It's my money and I want to get the best bang. Not a bag of rocks.

I use the refill services also ( Island Inkjet ), however with the R200 and its 6 cartridges, the refill services are too expensive. That cost as much, or more than the generic catridges.

With my HP78 Colour cartridge, I use the refill services as I can get it done for $20 or less, however the problem is that you can only refill it about 2 times, then the print head starts messing up.

For the guy purchasing from Ebay seller in Richmond, do you have a direct contact for him versus going through Ebay? If so, do you know if he takes credit card?

Yes definately Canon.

However, I would buy prefilled carts rather than diy carts - the reason is that the new printers have really tiny print heads. If you overfill your carts, it ends up leaking and clogging the print head.

A broken print head = useless printer.

check www.atlanticinkjet.com for good quality refills + prefilled carts.

Worked well for my 5 colour epson 820 (which died three days ago). Colours clogged but far less than with oem ink. Just today I bought an ip4000 but have yet to fire it up. Yup jumped ship from epson to canon.

If you're in the market for printers, from the reviews it prints photos as well as the 6 colour photo printers with the speed of the fastest of inkjets.

I've had mixed results with 3rd party ink cartridges... I recently got a bunch for my old Epson 875DC, and while the actual printouts looks good, the cyan print head clogs up in no time, and I have to do 2 head cleaning cycles before I start a few print jobs with it. They ink may be cheap, but I'm wasting most of it cleaning the print heads. I bought them off eBay, the brand is "Orange" and it looks like they're made in China.

Most of my printing is done on my Canon i9900, which uses the 8-colour BCI-6 system. My main concern with using 3rd party inks is the quality and longevity of prints. I paid a lot of money for that printer, I don't want to compromise print quality with cheap cartridges. Has anyone with some real photography expericene used 3rd party inks in the i9900. I'd like to know how the colour balance looks compared to genuine inks.

I can also recommend http://www.atlanticinkjet.com. I have ordered from them twice now, and they provided fast shipping and good quality cartridges. I purchased cartridges for a Canon printer and Brother All-In-One.

Just a warning, generic ink clogged up my printer before. It was still under warranty so I had to switch the cartidge with a genuine Epson cartridge and pretend I never used generics. Epson gave me a brand new printer. I don't use generic inks anymore, especially since my warranty is over.

Can't see how generic ink would be any more of a "clogging" concern than store brand.

For the amount I save each time I buy 3 sets of ink, I can buy another 3 or 4 printers.

$50 for 21 generic catridges versus $456 for 21 Epson brand cartridges from Staples.

I'm not much of a risk taker, however I'll gamble when it comes to ink :)

I tried that some time ago on my new Epson C80 from AffordableInks and the inks spilled and damaged my printer...

And my warranty just ran out by 1 month...Epson was kind enough to fix it :) . But they told me this could happen again if you don't use original manufacturer's ink >:( .

Trying to save a few bucks may cost you more in the end.

Buddy, a word to the wise.

I have used www.blankdvdmedia.com now for about 3 years and I enjoyed all the products they sell, always get my blank dvds and cases from them. About 2 years ago when that R300 first came out I bought it and then started buying my ink tanks from blankdvdmedia.com and now my printer is screwed up.

My print heads are clogged and even after cleaning them professionally and manually, they continue to give me streaks, I barely used this printer and used the Generic ink you speak of.

Just be careful that this doesn't happen to yours. Companies like Canon and Epson put a cleaner in the ink they sell and that's why you pay a premium, I'm going to try and salvage my printer once more if not I will be buying a new one and never changing to generic ink again.

Sometimes cheaper is not always better, be careful a friend of mine has never had issues and he buys the Epson ink.

Canon's ink has a lubricant in it (others probably do as well). Anyway, besides clogging, if you use cheap junk you can also end up with burnt out print heads and other burnt parts. Someone forwarded me the following (probably taken from the internet somewhere). This is plausible:

"A year or so ago I did my homework and settled on a Canon MP730 as my all in one machine for my home office. It used the same ink tanks as my Canon 400 printer so I saw this as a real bonus as I had been refilling these ink tanks with ink supplies from Sam's club for a couple of years. Within a few months of using the refilled tanks in my MP730 I noticed severe degradation of the quality of color print material. Having another high quality photo printer available to me I was not very worried about this and just kept using the printer and ignoring the poor quality of the occasional color print I ran through it until a week ago when the printer started to work erratically or not at all. I took it to a very highly reputable repair center where the old guy who runs the place knows more about electronic printing then any other 10 people I have ever met. I get to go in the back when he works on my stuff and watch and ask questions as he repairs it. He showed me where the color ink jets in the print head had become completely clogged from low quality ink. He explained that in the new higher resolution photo quality printers the orifices for the ink jets had become so fine to get the detail they can render that the use of anything but the highest quality ink was nothing but a recipie for inevitable failure of these machines. In my case not only did the print head need replacing, but so did the contol board right next to it. This had been caused by the clogged print heads which had visibaly overheated and not only cooked themselves but the adjacent contol board as well.

Doing the math I have decided that I am NOT going to have it repaired, that I am going to replace it"

The generic inks that are made in China are supposed to be really suspect. Some generic inks have a good reputation and are supposed to be almost as good as buying the printer brand's ink. The trick is finding the good generic stuff.

Anyway, I suppose if you figure you save $300-$400 before you wreck an inkjet with cheap junk ink, then it's probably worth the risk (just buy a new inkjet).

Try Costco's refill inks. They are made in the United States, and do not have the typical odour (alcohol?) associated with refilled ink.

I have used it for nearly five years in my Epson, printing over 2000-3000 pages, and it still works perfectly. I did have to buy an additional set of cartridges because the sponge in the original ones did not hold the ink anymore.

And now I use it in my $30 Canon. Lucily all of my printers are under $50, so I would not worry dying printers. By the time one dies, I can get a new printer for the cost of a set of genuine cartridges. :D

You don't save "a few bucks" by going generic... You save a tonne of money.

I pay $2.38 per catridge, thats including taxes and shipping. ( I buy lots of 21 catridges - 3 full sets, 3 extra black for $50 ). It would cost me more to buy 3 Epson brand cartridges.

On the 84 catridges I have bought, since buying my printer, I have saved over $1600 over the price of Epson cartridges. If my printer died tomorrow because of "clogs" or "leakages", I could just use some of the $1600 I saved to pick up a couple replacement printers.

exactly, printer companies make money from the ink they sell, i read somewhere that they have a chip that tells the ink cartridge die at a speicifc time. Why else is it cheaper in many cases to buy a NEW printer with a cartridge in it rather to buy a new cartridge?!

he sells the ink system for the Epson R200/220/300/320 for around $80 and it comes with almost 60 ink cartridges worth of ink in the kit, ive used it for over a year in my epson r200/220 and no clogs, messes, colours look as good as the epson brand cartridges, Ive also gotten three of the kits for my customers and they love them, no problems and idiot proof to set up, he also sells replacement ink in 100ml bottles which is about 8 cartridges worth for $10, give it a try, no cheaper way then this.

I used to buy my inks for my Epson 220 from thhis place in Canada online.

4 sets cost me about $50 canadian, and they worked great. Thats just over $2 each cart.

Then I decided on a continuous inkflow system.

Now I never need to change my inks anymore. Just add ink to the jugs when low.

1 fill is like 12 sets of ink, and it's easy to refill the jugs. Cost is only like $40-50 for the setup including full ink jugs.

Best advice I can give, and it doesn't matter if you're using generic ink or not, is don't let the printer sit idle. If you haven't printed anything in a week, run off a quick test page.

Worst thing you can do is just let your inkjet sit there a month or two. That's how clogs form. Keep that ink flowing.

As for those saying generic ink isn't worth it, do the math. On my old Canon, it cost around $80 for a set of genuine cartridges. It was around $20 for a generic set. Even if the generic cartridges totally trashed my printer after a ridiculously low five cartridge changes, I've saved $300 on ink, can buy a brand new replacement printer and I'm *still* ahead of the game.

Unfortunately, new Canons don't take generic ink any more, so I'm screwed now, and have to pay the ridiculous monopoly prices for genuine ink.

It's a freaking scam, and someone should take 'em to court.

so this thing doesn't work?

http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&ref=1005&product=2618858&category=Canon&catalog=Online&tab=2#more

That's for the ip3000 etc, which is the non-computer chipped ink cartridges.

Since then they released new printers, the ip4200, 5200 etc, which count how much ink comes out, and stop working, throw up all sorts of warnings about how if you continue to print your warranty will be void, your printer will fail, your dick will fall off...
