it's not bad but
a) I hate dell, because they gave me really, really nightmarish support on my crappy SmartStep 250N, and
b) you could get the small business Inspiron 1000 coming this week for $599, and spend the extra cash to upgrade the hard drive and ram. 1 gig of ram and a 60 gig 7200 RPM hard drive will make a big performance difference in a laptop.

How sure are we that the Inspiron 1000 will stay at the $599 range on Friday?

well, so far the other banners that someone got ahold of have been accurate (ie. the $599 20" lcd and the $999 26" lcd tv). The only thing is that somedays the item in the banner was not the only thing on sale, so they have more than just the one laptop one sale (ie. maybe the 1000, 2000, and a 700m or something).

If anything, wait until their 7 days of deals are done before getting that one.

I'd rather get the Best Buy Compaq V2000 model with a sempron processor for 900+tax

Comparable specs, but with a 14 inch "brightview" (glossy) widescreen instead

It'll also be lighter.

any idea how the battery life compares to the two?

Also, because it is Sempron, does the laptop heat up more often/easier?

not sure on the battery life from Dell, but I think the Compaq gets about 2.5 hrs

I'd check out the forums on Notebookreview.com

Alot of people there have bought the L2000, which is like the V2000 but Lance Armstrong branding, in all black and with better features for the money. I wish they'd offer that notebook in Canada, cause apparently at Sam's Club in the states, they have a L2000 with

Turion ML-34
512 ram
80 gig 5400 rpm HD
8x DVD-RW
14 Brightview widescreen
Broadcam wifi G, 6 in 1 reader and all the L2000 accessories (a notebook sleeve, earbuds and a Livestrong bracelet)

All for 1000 US.
