So right now my girlfriend only has cable TV (one above basic, up to Discovery Channel, or so). We'll be needing highspeed internet soon and Sympatico is not available in the area. So we are pretty much stuck with Rogers.

We are looking to move up one level on the cable, possibly (to include 50-some channels like FoodTV etc), and get highspeed. How would you go about it to get a good deal? Is it better to phone and discuss with them, or go to a Rogers outlet in the mall? Any pointers? TIA

not sure about those deals that they have in the stores, FS/BB about signing on for highspeed for 2 years and getting $200 in GC...perhaps they'll popup during back2school sales..

i signed up to the premium package just for the TLC channel.. and have it cancelled on August 1st.

Since then, a Rogers rep called me up, and asked me "what's wrong.. why did you stop it"... I explained that i wasn't too happy w/ the service.. and am contemplating of switching over to ExpressVu. He then proceeded to offer me 50% off on the previous Premium Package... he also offered me 3 months of PVR Cable Box for free and 50% off Channels (movie network, etc)... I wasn't too intersted, as i'm leaving for university. Anyways, I explained my current situation about Sympatico with him, and he offered me the following deal on Rogers @ Home.

- 6 bucks off any package for a year (i can downgrade and still keep the discount).
- tech installation waived.

That's a pretty sweet deal,i thought. I find that a lot of thanking for his effort and being genuine appeciative of his work (of searching for the proper SKU :P) really fueled in making this deal a success. Good luck.

You have to give 30 days notice now to cancel any rogers service. So chances of getting great deal now are very slim.Yes this is a new policy they just out into play.

I just moved from Sympatico over to Rogers

(Bell came out with a new card and *wink, wink*)

Rogers offered me a PVR for free for 2 years, my own Motorola Internet modem, High speed Internet extreme and cable with Sports Package (I'm a sports nut) free for the 1st 2 months

After 2 months the $$$ will start to kick in and I think I'll be paying ~100/monht

I split that up with my gf so we pay about $50/mo

Not bad cuz i'll have all the NFL games i can handle!

umm, terribly faulty logic, bad prediction.
these companies are thinking in the long-term... 30 days notice is irrelevant if you're for sure going to cancel it, go to the competitor, and spend $50*12 months = $600/year on any service they are offering. this is big money. in fact, i would predict that the deals would increase, given that they can continue to entice you in the 30 days before the service is cancelled.

Uh no the deals at one point were very good have allready gone down.Since you have to give 30 days notice they are in no hurry to get you back as a customer as they have 30 days. Before this you could call up and cancel and they would pled for you to stay and offer you a great deal. They no longer offer great deals on the spot like that. They still do offer deals but not nealry has good. And all of this beacuse people would abuse the system.

how is it an abuse of the system, if you're contemplating going to a competitor (citing competitor's rates) and they offer a rate to compensate/match? "i want to switch to competitor b/c their monthly fees are $10 lower" "ok, we will match that, and on top of it, xyz... we want to keep you as a customer".

also, how would you know that they no longer offer such deals? mere speculation. there is no indication of a reduction of service in any corporate retention departments. in fact, there are ncreasingly competitive deals, as evidenced by ads everywhere and new promotions between the head-to-head competitors, eager for long-term $$.

no hurry to retain customers? well, talk about the expense of staff to call back the customer and entice them to stay within the 30 day timeframe. not to mention complacency... and ACTUALLY losing the customer after 30 days, since s/he's already had time to prepare to switch, and is less likely to stay with a company which s/he perceives as having ignored customer concerns.

also, please use a spell checker... it really reduces your credibility since it seems like you're less able to communicate.

HOw's the service with 3web? Price-wise it looks tempting. Anyone have good/bad experience to share? Support? downtime?

never needed support, no downtime yet, but you have to buy your own modem. Any DOCSIS 2 Modem should work.

But, when calling to sign up they didn't seem very organized and they e-mailed me 3 times because they never entered our address correctly.

you should be in bed, resting, then

last i checked, this sort of abuse is not widescale and has little effect on the bottom line.

as an example, take costco's return policy... extremely generous... people return even after a year! i read an article about how costco's management does not really care about this, as their bottom line remains high, and in fact higher thanks to this flexibility.

also, given that making people give 30 days notice does NOT reduce the incidence of abuse (the people who abuse know how to work the system WILL work the system... and wait that 30 days, if in fact their customer service will give them a better deal). so, sorry. not everything is so cut-and-dry/morally polarizable.

That's what I'm worried about. Every now and then there's someone ranting about 3web here and they seem to get more rants than other ISP. That's a bit of a concern... Thanks though

I have used its gold cable for 2 months.
What I liked:
1. low cost
2. no cap
3. speed is relatively stable (the same as Rogers cable)

What I didn't like:
1. The phone is always bussy, you have to waste much time on waiting
2. bad customer service (still some ppl are nice), booking for installation is normally 7-10 days.
3. rude technician, I hate most of them.
4. both CSR and technician can make the order and book the installation
time for you. You don't know who is right.

What a joke is:
When you call in to make an order on cable, the CSR will ask you whether you used rogers cable before. If you used before and currently not using it, you will waste too much time on the activation of service online and in most case you won't get your internet working.
So if you are not with rogers or sympatico currently, just answer "no" when asked. And they will send some guy from Rogers to do the installation for you, which will save you much time by online activation.

The software is not necessary right now, so no need to purchase. You can claim to buy one in Staples.

If you want to sign in the LD plan, you have to have a land line number, no matter yours or someone else's. (yes, with LD you can save a little)

Like most ppl said, you just got what you paid.

Bestbuy and Futureshop sometimes run promos for Rogers high speed service. They sometimes offer $200 in gift cards, I would check that out ....

A subcontractor installer for Rogers told me there should be some new back to school promos coming out real soon.
