Why would someone your interviewing grant you permission to take a seat
Or do you mean interviewers?

Wait 'til they sit down, then take a seat on one of their laps.

Was it an IT interview?
IMO, most IT interviewers do not know proper etiquette, since they're geeks. So take a seat.

i would stand straight with arms at the side and not do anything until explicitly asked by them.

Stand there like an idiot?

They won't always tell you exactly what to do. you need to read body language and know when it sit down.

Just like they won't always tell you when the interview is over. You have to read people and realize when to break it off and leave. Otherwise you just look dumb sitting there blathering on while totally missing those hidden signs that tell you the interview is over.

If they sat down already, a simple "May I?" and a smile (or even a somewhat of a facial gesture) will do the trick.

If they are still standing, you stand too. Crack a joke about sitting down if you can to ease up the awkwardness

**Maybe** it's part of a test - part of the interview process - to see if you follow instructions well ;)

Just sit after they sit. Period.

You are not a kid. You don't need to be told when to sit.

If this is the most important thing that happened at the interview thats a really bad sign.

If youre all peers you dont have to ask "may I this" or "may I please that."

But if youre with the CEO (out of repect) wait till he sits down then of course sit down. Unless you like being subservient or something. Then move on to the important topics like the actual job.

Speak up for yourself (unless the job requires you to be a "yes man") or people will take advantage of you.

You reach a stage when this will come naturally, when youre a younger guy it can be intimidating for sure.

make sure you ask if you may speak before you actually speak. i don't know how'd you do that though, try hand signals or mouthing the words or something.
