Today I purchased the new Motorola Surfboard Modem (SB5101) for $29.95 (Reg: $59.95)

I was told that this promotion started on Friday by Shaw sales rep at the Burnaby location (Lower mainland, BC). You can also get the modem at the Shaw tower in Downtown Vancouver if Burnaby is too far for you.

I've been renting my old Terasen modem for a couple of years, paying an additional $5/month, when I decided to buy my own. The timing couldn't be better. :)

I think buying right off the bat was the best. $5/month for 1 year is already $60. Anyways, I heard that the new modems makes it easier for shaw to see how much download/uploads you've done (30gb cap for highspeed).

Is this a local deal or nation wide? I need to buy one also.

how much do you save if you use your own modem? it's 45+tax with modem rental so how much is it without the rental? Also, does sympatico also let you own modem?

I believe you add $5/month for modem rental whether you are getting LiteSpeed or HighSpeed from Shaw. So its better to buy the modem, especially with this promotion.

I cannot say its a nation wide promotion because it is not on the Shaw (www.shaw.ca) website. But again, I wouldn't know.

I don't know about easier... They have no problems monitoring my usage and I've got an old Motorolla Cybersufr.

There are no savings on Lite Speed whether you rent or purchase your modem. For High speed or Extreme you save $5/month. If you have been renting your modem for at least 6 months, you are eligible for the $29.95 modem purchase offer...not for new customers as far as I know...

The burnaby store is along kingsway - a few blocks west of metrotown. SOrry I dont know the exact address.

On a side note, if yo uhave already bought the modem a few years ago (the old one) you can bring it in to exchange for a new one for free.

Hmm, if this pops up at other locations, please post. I'm over on the Island, and could really use this deal... ours is slowly dying, and we've been renting for quite a while now. Back when we started, they didn't mention that we were paying extra not to buy it. D'oh.

You know for the longest time FS & BB have had the promo where you by the modem from em (ends up free), sign up with Shaw and you get the modem price back in a bill credit, first month free, free installation and next 6 at 29.95.

I thought the cap is 20gb? Did they increase the limit?

You can purchase your modem for $29.95, if you've rented it for more than 6 months. This, I believe, applies to ALL Shaw services locations. Phone customer service and ask...and yeah they can swap your old modem for a new one...but I like the older ones better. :)

I got that from a Surftime dealer too. Pay $60 for the modem and get three months of free service. So only $20 per month for the first three months and you get a free modem. Then switch to 3web. :)

Does the $30 promotion right now include any free months of service?

This is still available at LD. Not sure if FS still has it.

Something interesting I've noticed in the past two days using the new Motorola modem on HighSpeed is that I'm getting full 5 Mbps of download speed.

Little history lesson: On April 6 Shaw announced faster speeds (http://www.shaw.ca/NR/rdonlyres/D3369E40-3F39-4987-B102-35FAA6107783/0/ShawHighSpeedApr6.pdf) for Western Canada, however, at the time I was using my old Terasen modem and I did not notice any speed changes.
I was always getting about 2 Mbps with that modem and now I'm glad that the new modem is able to utilize the fastest speeds out there on Shaw.

I thought the cap is 20gb? Did they increase the limit?

I thought so too, but last week I got a bandwidth warning from them, and this is what was stated:

For our Shaw High Speed Internet service, we ask that your usage remain within an approximate guideline of 30GB total traffic (download/upload
combined) per month. Your usage, incidentally, was at 31.8 GB download and
6.2 GB upload in the last month. Please reduce this usage.

That is for the regular high speed service.

When signing up with 3WEB, do they have their own newsgroups, or can you still use SHAW's newsgroups?

I just called customer service and this deal only applies to existing customers who have been leasing/renting the old modems. All new installs are still required to pay the $59.99 for the modem.

Also, when the installer/tech came in on Saturday to hook it up, I asked him about the whole "network lag" situation that everyone talks about(when you have cable in a townhouse or apt area)..."supposedly"....and he guarantees this by the way....that the new modems have been upgraded dramatically that cable is actually now faster then ADSL....could be just a marketing ploy i guess......don't know too much about modems, so i'm not sure....but he did say it was an issue that they've been trying to correct for some time now....

this is true. I had the old modem and my speeds were horrible even after Shaw's annouced improvements. I did a trade-in for the new Motorola modem (I bought the old modem a long time ago and the trade-in was no hassle) and speeds are now at the full 5Mbps as well. :)

Gave away my modem today - my work Shaw @ work is awesome, but my home service sucked big-time and I switched back to Telus. I was only hooked up with Shaw @ home for just over a month - the connection speed slow-downs each night are awful.

This modem deal is pretty good, but their Telus customer incentive program is better... bring in your old telus modem, they give you a new Shaw modem (Motorola) and first month (extreme) - free.

They are $2 cheaper a month than Telus DSL too - too bad my connection didn't work out.

Does the "Telus customer incentive program" still exist? And is the new Shaw modem yours to keep?

Not sure if it's still on - I signed up in the early July. The modem is yours to keep, but you have to own the Telus modem you are giving them.

Sweet deal considering Telus charges for their modems and I think Shaw will upgrade your modem free if a new model comes out.

It does not seem like a good deal then. :(

I do not know. I hope you are not leeching any Microsoft software.

While I don't think SHAW is overly super...anything beats TELUS!! SOOOOOO happy I turfed them!
So true, especially with everybody locked out. You can't even sign up for ADSL now! Why don't those employees go home and surf RFD instead of getting sunburned and later leeching the taxpayers' money for their medical costs?

When I had Shaw a month ago, I was getting a steady 4.5 Mbps. Before the upgrade it was around 2.5 Mbps. This is on the same Motorola SB5100 modem.

BTW, some audit person from Shaw recently came to check that the filter is in place (and it is :D), and says that he can offer me 3 months of Internet service for free with a modem rental. I had to sign up under a different name though. After the three months, I can cancel and re-signup under the old account using the modem that I had already bought.

I hope I do not have to hassle Shaw for the credits....

Yup just called Shaw, they still offer the trade-in program for Telus modem. Free modem, 1 month free (extreme i believe), then $30 for 6 months if I remember correctly, a bit of discount if you have their cable service too after that I think.

My friend asked about trading in his rental modem for a New one. They told him it's $60 for a modem, maybe it's only for those people who already own the previous model. I am not sure, best if you call in yourself.

I also called 3web, they still can offer the 2 months of free service. They told me only 1 week left (eventhough it ended a month ago, so I think the guy was bluffing). They said I would have to sign up for LD service too to get the 2 months, or else it's only 1 month.

those mot surfboards also lets shaw control the number of IP's you get unlike the terasen. so remember to pickup a NAT router before switching over if you have been using a regular ethernet hub and multiple computers... unless you have been paying for extra IPs. ;)

I was told to keep my BW to under 50GB and I'd be fine. The only times that I've been warned was when I went over 80GB. Last month I lost track of things and went just over 60GB - but no warning so far...

In Jan, I traded in my old modem for the new Motorolla one for free and signed up for Xtreme-i service.

At first, Shaw's Xtreme-I service was at 5Mbs, and regular service was at 2.5Mbs or something. But they have recently in the last month of two increased the regular service to 5Mbs, and Xtreme-I to 7Mbs with a 50GB limit for both upload and download.

Currently at Telus. Their regular high speed service is at 1.5Mbs with a 30GB download and upload limit. Telus' High Speed Enhanced service is at 2.5Mbs with a 60GB limit.

Telus' High Speed Enhanced which is suppose to be the equivilant to Shaw's Xtreme-I.

Telus Regular Service = 1.5Mbs
Shaw Regular Service = 5Mbs

Telus Enhanced = 2.5Mbs
Shaw Xtreme-I = 7Mbs

With my old Shaw service before I got Xtreme-I have been called by Shaw 2-3 times saying I have been over the limit at over 100GB for a few months and I have to keep it a lot lower.

But so far since I got Xtreme-I, I haven't got any calls from shaw and have been doing about the same amount.

Here is my modem usage:

I've went over 1MB/s for download at a constant rate if you belive me :D (from a good server of course)
