Folks are you working as A/R or A/P Clerk or know someone who does ?

My gf is thinking of going back to school and majoring in Accounting in college, It's a 1-year intensitve program... is that what she will get after school A/R and A/P and Payroll and whatnot as opposed to those full-blown accounting designation that requires 4 more years of school that we can't afford right now

Please share some tidbits about these kinds of jobs i.e. the pay rate and future outlook (Well i hope these jobs don't get outsourced overseas or computerized by the time she finishes school :)

P.S. This is why we need a Jobs/Careers Forum mods!

I work in a role very similar to that within a hotel (Assistant Controller), though I'm responsible for A/P and A/R. I'd actually highly recommend the field. It's one that there is a demand for in every industry (someone has to pay the bills...), and little real potential of these positions being outsourced.

For pay rate, it's kind of like everything else in that it's very variable. If you're working for the government in this type of position, you could expect about 45k, working for resource/energy sector, probably 55k. Working the average private sector position as an accounting clerk, you could probably expect 30-35k.

I started in my position as an accounting clerk.. 2? years ago, with a starting salary of 33k + full benefits and pension plan. I also had *no experience in accounting or any sort of course to back me up (i do have a good for nothing ba though).
