View Full Version : Abercrombie & Fitch in coming to Toronto?

I was at Sherway Gardens the other day and I saw a piece of paper... like a sign, written with a marker... that said "Abercrombie & Fitch" something... that was on a wall next where one of those Sport Chek/Foot Locker stores was.... now they are doing some kinda construction there.
Is Abercrombie & Fitch really gonna be at Sherway?

Abercrombie and Fitch are supposed to open at Sherway Gardens and at Yorkdale. Supposedly its sister company Hollister will open at Yorkdale and Eatons Centre.

Not sure if it is good news or bad. My wife loves A&F stuff. Now, she does not need to go south to get the stuff but it may mean she can buy A&F stuff more often. :(

Abercrombie is my drugs. I have been in love with their clothes for 5 years now and having to make trips to the US or order online. The days of driving to Buffalo may be dwindling down but I'm happy I'll no longer have to face Customs Canada.
I'm a bit surprised they picked Sherway for AF over Eaton Centre/Yorkdale. Eaton Centre would have been my choice since it's a tourist destination and all of Canada won't have AF.
I cannot wait. They're aiming for late 2005 early 2006.
Some articles on AF entering Canada:

Now all we need is Victoria's Secret and I'll be a happy shopper.

i surprised they haven't built any stores in TO already... torontonians seem to LOOOOOOVE spending money on their clothes... i guess they wanted to assure the Buffalo stores a constant stream of revenue... which will now take a hit, heh.

my gf also loves their clothes, and it's so ridiculously expensive. I am not a huge fan of shopping their since I always feel uncomfortable in that store. It's not very...multicultural, and the staff all look like models and they just stand around not doing anything. Actually, wasn't there some big stink this year or last year about racist comments made by the designer?
But oh man...tax free week last year, we had to smuggle over about 1000 worth of stuff. Passing Canada Customs at about 1 in the morning was just great fun.
i remember walking into an A&F kids store, and my goodness its like all these 10-12 year old girls were just brainwashed...

As for A & F, isn't their line catered more to the tweens and the 20-23yr crowd?

I think Yorkdale is as classy as Sherway. Both have Holt, Sears, the Bay and mostly the same stores. Yorkdale has an edge having Coach, Lululemon, Aritzia, Marciano which are pretty $$$ too. It's probably because they couldn't secure a lease at Yorkdale since there are no large spaces.

Hate to say it but if you buy online when they open their Canadian stores, you'll probably still have to pay duty since it will come from the US in Columbus OH. It'll probably be like if you order now from AE, I was reading their whole schpeel and you have to still pay duties.

their brand/image is all about the all-american college jock. they created a lot of controversy a few years back with their racy a&f quarterly's, which could be mistaken as a quarterly porno rag. they featured a lot of young, naked/semi-nude models, and homoerotic imagery of athletic college jocks ...it shouldn't be a surprise that a lot of their customers are gay men.
the popularity of a&f has waned over the past couple of years though ...they tried too hard to be shocking and scandalous, i think people just got bored of them. that all-american jock look is kind of passe.

Because it's quality clothes, you get what you pay for.

Sherway's posh but it doesn't have the reputation of Yorkdale. Sherway's food court might be more posh but most of the time, the volumes don't even compare to Yorkdale. Not to mention that Sherway is pretty much inaccessible other than with a car.

As some people have eluded to, you are paying for the marketing, image and for the exclusiveness of their clothing.
The quality of the clothing itself is fairly standard, but better than Gap sometimes. Mostly just cotton or cotton/polyester blends. But, their stuff is definitely young and trendy.

Nope Sherway is very accessible, you do not need to have a car to go there, for those who rely on public transit (TTC), goto Kipling subway Station and take the route 123 Shorncliffe, service is every 10 mins or better during most times. From Mississauga take Mississauga transit route 4 Applewood, I believe you can catch it at Dixie Outlet Mall.

abercrombie, hollister, A&F is all crap, made for 'shallow pretty white folk' in the states. their target demographic is probably the guys from http://www.leehotti.com/
the CEO is some 60 year old 'dude' with torn jeans, and teeth bleached as much as his hair, with enough collagen injections into his lips to make them as big as Angelina Jolie's, sad.
http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2006/01/24/jeffries/story.jpg
what's even more interesting is the history of A&F.
A&F used to make rugged outdoor menswear and hardware, like rifles and shotguns (some which had a price tag of over $20,000).
now its a store where their seasonal catalog is riddled with homo-eroticism, and little to do with clothing. seeing how homophobic this forum is, im surprised so many are excited and looking forward to their expansion into canada.
"It's almost everything. That's why we hire good-looking people in our stores. Because good-looking people attract other good-looking people, and we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don't market to anyone other than that."
"Listen, do we go too far sometimes? Absolutely. But we push the envelope, and we try to be funny, and we try to stay authentic and relevant to our target customer. I really don't care what anyone other than our target customer thinks."
For the kids there's Abercrombie, aimed at middle schoolers who want to look like their cool older siblings. For high schoolers there's Hollister, a wildly popular surf-inspired look for "energetic and outgoing guys and girls" that has quickly become the brand of choice for Midwestern teens who wish they lived in Laguna Beach, Calif.
When the Hollister kids head off to college, Jeffries has a brand -- the preppy and collegiate Abercrombie & Fitch -- waiting for them there. And for the post-college professional who is still young at heart, Jeffries recently launched Ruehl, a casual sportswear line that targets 22- to 35-year-olds.

Nothing wrong with being white people.
Those tshirts made in the past by A&F were a big mistake but I have seen many asain parody shirts in other stores in Toronto along queen street. So its not just big chains like A&F who are doing this. I guess if you don't like A&F dont shop there if you think it was made only for whites? Why is it this topic comes up so much. The same thing back in the day with Tommy Hilfigure being a racist which was made up to make his sales decline.

I guess if you don't like A&F dont shop there if you think it was made only for whites?
and also its not the fact that they target only 'white folk' in their clothing. that i am fine with, its just the aarogance and narcissism of the CEO and the whole corporate culture of A&F and its snobby, stuck up, disillusioned, easily manipulated customers. i buy GAP, i used to WORK at GAP. if thats not one of the most whitewashed kinda stores, then i dunno what is. instead of shunning all people who do not fit the 'thin and attractive' image that A&F target, GAP has expanded their sizes and fits to ACCOMADATE those who are not exactly 'thin and attractive' like the new 'Straight, Original, Curvy' womens jeans. and also, the CEO of GAP isn't a flaming douchebag.
