warning guys, do not buy Pur-Lite energy efficient light bulbs. They explode and emit smoke. I bought 4 packs of 4 at Canadian tire and 3/4 have exploded all ready. you can see the bulb all black and the plastic has torn apart and bubbled.

Pur Lite is by Reusable Technologies Inc. MADE IN CHINA.

well the plastic shattered and alot of smoke came out.. it filled the whole house with this awkward smell. yeah, and there was a big spark of light/fire.. maybe a fire hazard as well if used near oils.

what does 'made in china' (in cap letters no less) have anything to do with it?

MrDisco, it means that there was warnings in the media not too long ago that many electrical devices such as extension cords and lightbulbs made in China and Asia do not meet Canadian safety standards.

Ouch, I thought it was he law to meet the CSA standards if an item was sold in Canadian stores?

Obviously attempted to denote an inferior product.

Absolute, they are supposed to. In the media reports they said that many of the products had the stickers signifying certification but they had never been tested or certified by the CSA or UL. Apparently it has become a huge problem nationwide, not only with electrical devices but with plumbing parts and even saftey footwear.

Thanks for the clarification. It's scary to know that there are counterfit CSA stickers out there; it's not exactly like they currently have any way to validate which are real or not. Imagine having holographics and watermarks on CSA labels? :)

it is the gaseous vacuum of the inside and the coating on the inside of the bulb that is being burnt and giving off smoke when they explode. the extreme heat of the bulb creates that noxious fumes u are seeing. cheap materials react differently than more stable ones.

I remember I was once washing the walls with a wet cloth.
I was waving the wet cloth in the air, and some water managed to splash a light bulb lamp (lamp had cover off), the bulb hissed and some smoke appeared. I thought that was cool, so I wrung (twisted the cloth) over the bulb and made the bulb explode and go on fire. It was scary and funny.
I was going to post it on RFD (in March) but I was still busy cleaning.

Maybe you should phone up Canadian tire, and write them a letter about this problem, They might be happy to avoid the lawsuit.

Mine have been okay - working as expected. I would talk to CDN Tire for notice of recall? Replacement.
