BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (AP) — A woman who police say had been drinking heavily before she gave birth was charged with child neglect after the baby was born intoxicated and diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome.
Melissa Tanner, 37, had a blood alcohol content of 0.29 per cent when she gave birth June 30, and her daughter's was 0.21 per cent, according to an affidavit by police. The legal limit for drivers in Oklahoma is 0.08 per cent.
Hospital staff had to use an oxygen bag to help the baby start breathing and gave her medication to counteract any narcotics, according to the affidavit.
Tanner allegedly told police she and another person had consumed a case of beer and that she regularly drank during her pregnancy.
She was jailed on $30,000 (all figures U.S.) bail. At a court appearance this week, Tanner was advised of her rights and ordered to return to court Aug. 5. She has not yet filed an application for an lawyer or entered a plea, the court clerk's office said.
Sheriff's investigator James Wynn said the baby has fetal alcohol syndrome and has been placed in a foster home with a caretaker experienced in dealing with addicted infants.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the syndrome as the leading preventable cause of mental retardation and physical deformity. The severity of disability in this case won't be known until the baby is older.

I went to high school with a girl who had a kid, didn't tell her parents, ended up having it in her bathtub at home and killing it by strangulation, then dumped it in a garbage can somewhere..
This was about 3-4 years ago.. Her name was Amanda something-or-other..
And the most disappointing part was that she actually CAME BACK TO THAT HIGH SCHOOL and didn't get a beat down.
The high school is St. Augustine in Brampton

Wasn't there a recently story about a high school student who gave birth, killed the baby, then went back to her prom. Doesn't even remotely sound like your situation, but these seemingly arbitrary acts of slaughter is sickening. Is it any wonder why people are so fervent about abortion clinics? The ones who do see them to full term, only kill them anyways.
They impose a rule that says you're not allowed to buy cigarettes or consume alcohol until you're a certain age, likewise with driving; why not apply this to sex. These people have demonstrated amply why they're not ready to handle the responsibility of sex. Take away their rights to procreate; either rip out their uterus or make them wear a chastity belt.

She wore huge sweaters all the time..
We all thought she was pregnant for sure, because of the stuff she was wearing, but none of us expected her to do what she did..
And yeah, thats complete negligence on her parents behalf, she was only like 16

I would NOT BE SURPRISED if this was her.
She really did come back to our school like a year later, after serving her time in the youth womens facility near my house (she did like 4 months.)

Are you most disapointed in yourself because you did not have the COURAGE to beat up a girl in high school? Or are you disapointed because you wanted to beat up a girl but were not STRONG enough?
Personally, i'm disapointed that you think violence after the fact would serve any useful purpose.

I doubt this case is "only in america", many newborns are born with FAS unfortunately. We probably just hear less of it happening in areas other than the US.
