View Full Version : Chinese Women, Welding Masks & White Gloves - what up?
Jumbotron

I'm not sure if this is just a West Coast phenom, but can someone explain the numerous sightings I've made of the Chinese Women who drive around town in various makes of vehicles wearing the giant welding mask visor while wearing white gloves?
It's just downright freaky - my Wife says that it's spawned from the desire to stay fair and not tan. I'm cool with the Tandoori Tan and never thought that white pasty skin looked all that hot.
Is it about looks or Melanoma? or something bigger in life that I just don't get?

Ooooo those visor things! i hate that!
1. They wear the gloves so the steering wont burn their skin.
2. The visors are for the sun blocking.
3. they look gay.
lol.

I guess different cultures have different preferences. Traditional Asian ppl prefer white skin. Dark = unattractive.
Those masks look soooo stupid tho. Wear sun block or something.

I hate the ones with those visors. It's pretty ********. They don't do ****. Sometimes its a see-through one that is "orange" or some weird color like that. They don't know that UV can go through it.

Personally, I'm happy with my skin colour as is, and prefer no tan on my body.
I may look into this new fad. ;)

I'm far from being traditional - I think Asian girls with all-over golden mocha tans are super-sexy vs. the glow in the dark white legs. Maybe it's from being a WestCoaster, but it looks so sad when it's the middle of August and you see someone who looks like they've been wearing pants for the entire Summer.
Visor wearers look like they have something to hide.

well my mom wouldnt even touch those visors
they are a fashion kill
yeah it is true that in most of asian culture, generally white skin is praised as "pretty" and tanned as "not so attractive"
but here in canada, i see people wanting to be more tanned all the time and my gf gets so upset about her skin being so white
all i can do is tell her how pretty she looks
lol
well thats what boyfriends are for anyways...

Car windshields block about 80% of UVA, and regular glass blocks about 50% of UVA; both types of glass block UVB effectively too. If you've got tinted glass, those figures are probably even lower. Looking like an idiot is sort of a high price to pay for the marginal decrease in UV exposure.

the visors are to block out the gamma radiation coming from the planet Zarcon, and the white gloves are an hommage to Michael Jackson.
Didn't you know, there is a huge interplanetary league of chinese women who just happen to be Michael Jackson fans. who would have guessed.

Your wife is right. Asian women would rather have lighter skin than darker skin.
Actually that's pretty much in all cultures where there are dark skinned people. Lighter skin is considered more attractive than darker skin. I guess it has something to do with being able to see a person's face more clearly or maybe some anthropological evolution thing where darker people were more feared because it is harder to see them (especially their facial expressions) in low light.
However when you get into cultures where there are lighter skinned people now days it is considered unattractive to be too light skinned....pasty they say. So pretty much the balance now days as far as attractiveness is somewhere in between too light and too dark.
Personally I think really really black african people, "so black they look purple", as they say, are totally amazing looking. I'm talking about the blackest of the black. Dunno from which part of africa they are from...I should try and look it up.

The good one block UV and the good one is expensive. There are many clone which do not do anything and not expensive.
The white glove is to avoid different color of both arm.
Chinese has a phrase like "one white hides three ugly".

 OH NO look at that invisible black man! haha j/k
Actually I believe in Africa colonization had a lot to do with lighter skin being more "high status" because lighter skined ppl were given better jobs plus the white colonizers are the high society, that imposed the idea that light = higher status = respect = beauty.
Not sure why it's like this in Asia tho. I think in the old days white and clear skin were the attributes of someone in high class rich families. Because they stayed indoors while the working class had to work outside.

But here's the killer funny thing - I've seen at least 3 dudes wearing these in public. So yeah, dorky already - but uber dorky when it's on a dude.

I see these alot in Richmond. These things look so stupid!! They were selling lots of these to the 'Honger' types at the night market last year. Most of these people that wear 'the mask' are pretty poor drivers and I don't think wearing something that may alter the perception of their surroundings is a good thing....especially in Richmond!! Red seems to be the most popular colour. I must have seen 4 of these masks of shame while driving home today.

youll see older women doing it
becuase tanned skin usually means that youre likelower class, as in the working class - as they tend to get tanned while working outside
but this obviously isnt whats happening anymore, hence why youll see the women doing it

okay let me reply this as an asian girl...
there are several reasons as to why an asian woman and/or man would wear a visor and gloves...
1) some ppl simply don't tan...they burn. I am one of those..i can stay in the sun for an entire afternoon and my skin would be torched...burnt to black..with no intention of turning tan/brown/golden
2) asian skin tends to get sun/age spots easily...and by this i don't mean 'freckles'..i mean PATCHES that will not fade with time...and the more sun we get, the more patches we get and the darker it gets...so..in the winter time when everyone is pale, we'll be white with brown patches...and that doesn't look good on us...
3) because we have such a pale complexion, we are more likely to get skin damage and therefore, more than likely, skin cancer. so...if we can protect ourselves from another source of danger, why not?
4) gloves are used because...hands tend to age the fastest. Even if someone looks young, their hands will show their age...and sun damage can easily age a person's hands with wrinkles and/or age/sun spots
so..using these 2 things will aide some ppl in preventing skin cancer, age/sun spots..etc...instead of having to buy expensive creams or to get laser skin-care to get rid of these problems later in life
Yes, it looks ridiculous on some ppl...but if i had to pick health or looks, i would go for health anyday...
also..in asia most ppl (men and women) carry an umbrella during the summer...i think that looks more ridiculous than wearing a mask/hat....
BTW, i don't wear gloves or the shield..haha..i rather burn. But even at 24, I've discovered i'm developing sun spots on my face...i hope they dun turn black (like they did on my dad...he had about 100 sun spots on his face and had to get laser skincare done or else those burnt cells could turn bad and into cancer..)

I found that rather amusing. Chinese generally tan pretty well. Although I do know some freinds that don't tan very well. But hardly anyone is as fragile/sensitive as you described. For some strange reason, HK culture is after the "pale complexion" and everyone's extremely paranoid about getting wee bit tanned. But pale, freckles? Tell caucasian people about it.

No, Chinese generally does not tan well under the sun. May be better than caucasian but it is not well without conditioning. You may see them tanned well because there is cosmetic to help hiding that from your view. My wife is using a pencil like thing to touch up the spots every morning. A lot of Chinese girls has sensitive skins.

Sun ages your skin and gives wrinkles. period.
Look at the california/florida/brazilian beach bums that are always tanned. Their faces are wrinkled and look like leather after a few years.

as far as i'm concerned, NO ONE can make such general assumptions as to which race/culture is superior or inferior as compared to other race/cultures.
i agree with biosh, after reading all the posts you've posted, you've always had something to say about other race/cultures...and have always assumed that being caucasian is superior to being asian or black
grow up and learn to respect other people. don't jump to conclusions or have immediate racial profiling. everyone is different and whether or not someone feels superior or inferior is all related to their upbringing and their individual beliefs.
BTW, being a minority in Canada does not mean I feel inferior, nor do I feel superior. Infact, I've never considered 'race' as an issue growing up in Canada. I am proud to be Canadian and that's all I care about.

I wear the visor and gloves and I think it's very fashionable. Everybody posting here is just jealous of my beauty and fashion sense. Everybody wishes they were as beautiful and chic as I am. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.
Yeah, but your skin isn't white, shiny and smooth from the Visor and gloves - I'm thinking it's from a very natural high-protein man-made substance :-) Buck Khaki.... hehe

its not a west coast thing...its here in toronto too and they're just as stupid looking.
I can see it used to shade the sun in the car, but wearing it on the bus, now that is plain stupid.

I believe I read montecore mention that she is east asian somewhere...possibly chinese, so in this case I think she is decrying what she see's as a flaw in her own people's current common consciousness.
ANyway, I don't think chinese people feel so much inferior to whites as more in awe of them.
that's whats even worse about it... wow get a boyfriend and stop trolling on internet forums, this post from her really set me off this time, usually i just ignore her posts

I always feel inferior to some people because I cannot speak without going through my brain first. Sigh! That slows me down.

Dunno what social class you're from, but you're totally a racist. Don't agree with your postings. Absolutely degrading to a race ... but more ..... you're degrading yourself with such comments. You're very low. 'Nough said.

i read over the post and posted early on and dont find Jumbotron's comments racist at all.
I don't think we have to get all politically correct when we want to comment on an observation that we find amusing or strange.

okay, give me a sec before I comment
edit:
Okay read the OP and I agree, it could have been better worded, lacked in the sensitivity department, but still, it is borderline. this welding mask one is just a bit better on the sensitivity side, but both topics side by side getting comments. hmmmm maybe you could have reworded it better or have waited for comments on this one before going head on with two of them.

Okay fellow RFDers - I honestly didn't mean to step on anyones toes in either of my threads - they are just observations of things I see everyday living here out West that absolutely puzzle me - I don't get any of these things - I guess I don't need to.
I posted the other thread, because of the great responses from this thread - I did mention this thread in the my OP on the other thread too - it's not like I posted the other one without acknowledging this one. The info on the social class differences perceived by tanning or not was something I didn't know about. I thought maybe someone could explain the shoe dragging thing too.
To those who consider me being racist - I'm a first generation Chinese Canadian who is fluent in 2 dialects of Chinese - so why would I diss my own roots? I'd be the first defend any person of ethnicity.
My topics are NOT made up things or generalizations - not like I said ALL Chinese...

being a specific race does not make you immune to being a racist. just because you're a 1st generation chinese-canadian does not make you immune to making fun of or being ashamed of your own race. knowing 2 dialects of chinese does not make you non-discriminatory either.
many ppl are ashamed/embarassed of their own race and cultural beliefs and often uses comic relief to release their own cultural stress. in fact, some ppl try so hard to assimilate into society that they WILL diss their own roots.
i'm not saying you are racist but i just wanted to make it clear that everyone can be racist, to their own or another race. Being chinese does not make you immune to making stereotypical comments about the chinese race and culture.
I think we'll all feel more comfortable if you didn't specify "Chinese" in the topic. Like in any race, there are diff. ppl. For example, dragging one's feet is not a 'chinese phenomena', so why be so specific in targeting chinese ppl? Anyone who can walk can drag their feet if they wanted to. Anyone who is aware of the dangers of the sun can purchase a sun-mask. It doesn't have to be race-specific.

Points taken - I can respect your stand on this. The tone of my OP was meant to be light (not comical, sorry if it came across that way) so that this thread wasn't taken too seriously - like getting people bent out of shape. I'm more than comfortable with my culture and assimilate into both cultures very well, thank you very much.

I think you are speaking for too many people - since I am sure that there many people that participated in the thread that didn't feel uncomfortable about it.
As to, who drags their feet and who wears white gloves and visors - yeah, any person of any ethnicity can wear them or walk a certain way - but, I can't say I've ever seen anyone other than someone of Asian decent wearing the visors and white gloves in traffic - so I would insist that this localized to a particular ethnic group rather than encompassing all human kind. Same with the feet shuffling - an odd person shuffles their feet from time to time - but I've only observed Asian groups of people walking like that (like 4 young men or women walking through Oakridge Centre all of them dragging their feet at the same time)
