go to MEC or a bike shop; buy some proper bike oil AND PUT A SINGLE DROP ON EACH CHAIN LINK.

It will take 3 or minutes but that is the best way.

Bicycle chains need very thick grease to stay on.

WD40 removes grease... you might wanna do that before you oil it up.

Bicycle chains need very thick grease to stay on.In a word, no. As mentioned by Roninvancouver, oiling each link with a good bicycle oil is best. It is best to clean the chain before lubricating.

That said, WD-40 is also very popular. If you don't clean your chain then WD-40 helps get the crap out of the links. Make sure to also spray the rear gear cluster and the derailleur mechanisms. Let drip dry onto newspaper overnight and wipe with a rag in the morning.

what he said.

seriously, if you're going to do it, the chain needs to be cleaned first (take the chain off the bike and dunk it in a good bucket of cleaner), and then when it's been rinsed and dry, a coating of chain lube (pedro's??)

as for spraying the cassettes (next to the hubs) with wd40, just be a bit careful---i realize that most hubs are now sealed cartridges, but don't forget wd40 is a degreaser, and some bike parts need their grease. . .
