If you have to support/donate for a certain cause, which one you will donate?
*Assume they are not local charity, so it will be (or supposed to be) beneficial to everyone on earth.
*I am asking which area would u like to see your support go, not which group has lower expense or closer to your home.
*Birthcontrol fall under "Education" for the poor
*War on terrorism does not necessary means "war". Reducing hatred between people can also acheive the same effect and should be used most of the time.

World Vision. They take less for administration than nearly every other charity, so more of your money gets to people who need it rather than bureaucrats.

Education. By far. Education leads to prosperity, which leads to more bright minds. The more thinkers, the more research and development going on.

Environment's the way to go. Nothing else matters if the Earth can no longer support life... that is unless you want to fund research in getting our asses up into space, living on ships or colonial planets.

I'm weary of any charity that's tied to a religion. If you feel like giving to a charity that feeds the hungry etc, Oxfam is a great secular choice.

exactly my thoughts.
I participated in a paid discussion forum and that was pointed out about World Vision.
Also they seem to be spending lots of money on TV advertising. Makes me! wonder where they spend their money.
and the point about taking in less admin money than others. Well this also was raised. Everyone says that, but who to believe. You cannot go and audit their books because they are not public companies.

Thanks for your opinion.

How do I know my donations are going where you say they are going?
World Vision feels all charities must be fully accountable to the public. That's why we follow accounting procedures established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and why we are audited annually by a nationally known independent CPA firm and publish a detailed Annual Report outlining income and expenses. Click here to view the 2004 Annual Report online, or to obtain a copy, call 1-888-511-6598.
Through constant evaluation and careful management, we are able to channel a large portion of our total income to ministry services. During fiscal year 2003, 86.1% of funds went directly to World Vision's program services and future commitments.
A number of independent financial watchdog organizations have established financial standards for accountability which World Vision adheres to fully. Among them are the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability and the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

I'd toss my vote in for Doctors without Borders. Very on the up and up and they don't play the "You can have the food when you pray" type stuff.

yeah, i agree they are efficient...i would've signed up with them if they were not so overtly religious
30 bucks a month per child is a reasonable 'investment' in humanity
edit: oops, i posted this without seeing the responses that voiced opinion similar to mine

All I know is that I don't ever hear about them on the news saying that they won't help people unless they convert first. My mother-in-law used to work on the board of directors for World Vision Canada, and *she* says they're trustworthy, so that's who we go with.

Personally, for local charities, I always support medical over social. No matter how bad your upbringing is/was, this country gives such opportunities that you can rise above it through sheer will and effort and even if you don't, you are still better off than at least 90% of the worlds population. With medical, it's often a case of genetics (luck beyond your control). (Although I can hear many of you thinking that any fool who smokes 2 packs a day or eats himself obese deserves the health problems he gets.)
