View Full Version : What hardware in your comp affects online file transferring?

Hey all,
Just wondering, aside from the obvious (your modem and type of internet service you have) what all else can affect downloading speeds? Like, for example, does your CPU really play a role? Would I notice a difference in concurrent downloads on a P2 and a P3 machine?
Thanks in advance!

Of a single file? Or downloading many files at the same time.. as in Bittorrent?
I can't really see why any hardware on a system would slow down a single file transfer over typically home internet speeds.
Maybe be more specific on your problem?

if you use azureus bittorent client, be sure to have some CPU muscle for good performance... i always hear my friends complaining it takes up too much CPU (cuz they got ****** comps)

Hey guys, that's exactly what I mean... many files at the same time...
So the CPU does make a difference then, huh? What about HD's? 5400 vs. 7200 vs. 10000 RPMs? What about cache sizes?
I wonder if a it would be wise to get a notebook as a dedicated downloading/'Net surfing machine?
The background basically, is that recently I had to do a reformat/reinstall on our machine due to excessive spyware, etc... So I'm thinking of getting a home network setup with a router and second station...

The machine can only run as fast as the slowest component. In this case, it is your broadband connection.
If you have Rogers Extreme (5 Mbps), does it matter how fast your hard drive is? You can only receive data at a rate of 5 Mbps (theoritical, actual speeds will be lower)
Does it matter if BitTorrent sucks up 100% of the CPU? The internet will not slow down just because your computer is slow.
