i'm looking at putting together a new system for my girlfriend (who is more of a gamer than i am ).
i usually order parts through a family friend, but his warehouse supplier only carries ****** parts (if you read some of my past posts, i've had bad ram, a bad mobo, and a burnt video card). so i've lost faith in him.
any recommendations for putting together a quality P4 PCIe system? maybe one that will give me some discount on a large order? i usually head down to "filtech computers" on college, as they're always a few dollars cheaper than the popular "canada computers".
TIA!

I pretty much strictly deal with NCIX.. good prices, especially with promocodes, and no PST for us Ontarians.. pretty much covers the shipping costs and then some.

NCIX is good.
Canada Computers is just fine IF:
- you know what you're doing
- you don't ask them any questions
- you know how to spot a used part
- you never expect any semblance of customer service (exception: return a part and give a VERY specific diagnosis, and they'll often take it back without wasting your time)

By the way.. if you're planning a gaming rig, why choose P4 over AMD? (Just curious)
In any event, with some GREAT parts, you should be able to put together an awesome system with NCIX for about $1300.

LOL. I find their customer service lacks because they have asian people working there...I don't mean to be rude (im chinese as well) but the people they have working for them either a) dont speak good english and b) dont really care. they just sit around and talk to co-workers and then just ring the product for you.
I wouldn't go there because some of them don't know much about computers...from my experiences.
Their prices are good though so I'll stick with them ;)

actually canada computers is pretty mean, my brother told me they make fun of some of the customers (in chinese, so they don't hear).
i actually picked up an ATI Radeon X800 XL already, and looking to build a decent system around it for my girlfriend. HDD and optical drive are not necessary. i'm almost sure i'll stay under $770 (the card cost me $230, perks for working with the company).
i'm probably going to go with an intel processor just because i know AMD gives me more bang for the buck, and i'm using an Athlon XP 2500+ to type this. in other words, i really don't know why. :)
what do you mean about NCIX promocodes?

Well actually all stores do that, especially when there are only young people working there. I've never had any problems with CC myself, at the three locations I've been to. But then again I do know my stuff very well and all my returns are legit.

PCCANADA, (pccanada.com). Great place to shop, quality parts for low prices. Also, their RMA and customer service is great, returned a defective DFI mobo fine.

I'll second NCIX. Never had a problem, prices are good, No PST covers the shipping cost in most cases.
Just make sure you enter NCIX through RedFlag links as you will get a better price than going there directly AND you support the website.

Are you sure about the better price part?

WTF you talking about?
NCIX weekly sales + pricematching = cheapest prices.

Don't ask, test it out.
Through RFD (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=15054&promoid=1026&affiliateid=472595) $119.99
By going to N.CIX directly then searching product (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=15054&vpn=6L200P0&manufacture=Maxtor) $136.44

That's just a link from their SALE banner which you can find on the front page of NCIX.com.

I like my reasoning better as it would make people always link to NCIX though RFD :)

Hmm no promocode.. here's a tip, take the second link and add "&promoid=1026" to it.. guess what price you get! Regardless of the affiliate ID tag.

I find they are more on b). Just don't ask the ones who work on the counter. I just compare prices between all the computer stores in Pacific Mall. If Canada Computers has the good price, I just shop there. By the way, I have never ever had bad service there. Lately, I shop at PCGate Computers, their customer service is not bad.

I find their customer service lacks because they have asian people working there...I don't mean to be rude (im chinese as well) but the people they have working for them either a) dont speak good english and b) dont really care. they just sit around and talk to co-workers and then just ring the product for you.

my recommendation is that you dont' use P4 for gaming. Any gaming should be done with an AMD 64.
as for the ncix deals. When a sale occurs, you can only get the sale price by clicking on their banner and it leads you to the sale prices. However, if you search each product individually through their homepage, the prices are regular. So the only way to get their discounted price is the liink through the banner or RFD.
and IMO, all local computer stores should carry the same quality parts, well at least all the ones that I've been to. Perhaps it's different in ontario.
