Hey RFD,
Right now, I am using Norton AV and I'm pretty sure it is the reason why my computer is so slow. Does anyone have any suggestions for a virus scanner that is easier on the resources but still is good (ie: offers automatic viral definition updates and the option to do realtime scanning?) Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!!

Following may be of interest, Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5.0 (http://www.kaspersky.com/personal-usa)

Kaspersky not a resource hog huh?
Psh, anyhow, try ESET Nod32...at nod32.com.
Uses minimal system resources, quick scan times compared to kaspersky. Though Kaspersky may be better (not much from what I've read), the benefits of having a faster and still safe pc is what I prefer. Rather than lag and long scantimes for over 300-400,000 files on my pc.

Have tried eset NOD32 a while back and was not impressed.
*shrug*
Again, depends on which review used for reference and default security level, focus, options, update frequency...
eset NOD32 does not even rank on a number of reviews, yet, Kasperksy has no issue obtaining some ranking.

Does anyone have Norton Systemworks installed on their computer? I'm not sure if that program is also responsible for hogging up resources...

Yep, most Norton products are known as system hogs.

Well, right now I am using Avast. Any comments on how good it is at detection? There are so many AVs to choose from, I don't even know what to pick!

If you like Norton, try their Symantec AntiVirus (http://www.symantec.com/smallbiz/sav_sbe/index.html), which is much less a resource hog compared with their consumer software.

Currently running Symantec Corporate AntiVirus v9 here. It runs great without all the bloat-ware that comes with the retail Norton crap.
I tried upgrading to Corporate v10, but for some reason the memory-usage spiked and so I had to revert back to v9.

NOD32 runs faster than Norton AV, Symantec AV, AVG, Avast, and McAfee through my own experience.
It also has a good track record according to Virus Bulletin, a third-party industry source.

I run McAfee, doesn't seem to be a resource hog... for you of those running Norton, that thing will slow your machine to a 486!!!

i'm currently using AVG. I had Norton 2005 installed before, but the trial period expired so I needed something to protect my computer....
kind of off topic, but i'm having computer problems lately and after norton expired it wouldn't let me use it so I installed AVG and it detected a virus that Norton couldn't detect. I would go w/AVG.

Totally agree. Another happy v9 user here. :)

I run McAfee as well. There's a reason why Norton and McAfee are at the top of the AV market. However I will never go back to Norton; and McAfee is not a resource hog at all. These two companies undeniably have far better resources in virus protection than anyone else, especially those free ones. If you want reliability and no resource hogging, I would easily go with McAfee. Oh and Nod32 is not faster than McAfee in my own experience - it's about the same imho. But between the two I would sooner trust a name that major corporations trust, and Nod32 (or anything else that has been suggested thus far) is far from being one, if ever at all.

Perhaps marketing budgets and distribution?... just a thought.

Partly... but they are the oldest, longest surviving, and most trusted names in the AV industry, that's why. they have consistently been the better AV over other countless of competitors in the past and have since become a major brand with the financing, market share, and resources to be better than those starterup AVs. It will be a long time (if ever at all) before we will see a big3 in the AV industry. Untill then, they will always be the biggest 2 with better resources over the competition. No one else right now is even close.

Here's a theory:
Norton and McAfee have the greatest resources to hire the best virus writers, and who's going to have cure for the virus within hours of it's release. Your friendly neighbourhood #1 and #2.

This is only good for one time scanning your machine and does not provide real time protection.

NOD32 isn't free but it is the best.
Been running it on my laptop and work computers for 2 years and it works like a charm. Best of all, you never know it's there until there's a VIRUS :)
