BenQ 1620 OEM -> Retail firmware flash?

My drive is an OEM drive recognized as ATAPI DD 2X16X4X16X with firmware G7L9.

I noticed that he firmware for the retail drives are MUCH newer than the OEM drives. The retail firmware date is June 9, 05 while OEM is Nov 04!

Has anybody safely flashed the OEM to retail? Anybody had problems?

I flashed the drive from an HP 630c to a dw1620 using a program named windwflash.exe. I wanted auto bit-setting so I flashed it back to an HP.

The firmware files have a cvt extension.

By using windwflash.exe, I was able to flash the drive using retail Benq, oem Benq, and HP firmware.

PM me if you want the flasher. I also have a hacked firmware that increases the ripping speed past 8x for retail DVD's.

By using windwflash.exe, I was able to flash the drive using retail Benq, oem Benq, and HP firmware.

When i use nero I see it automatically changes the bit setting to dvd rom when burning +R's. So if I go to retail it won't do it anymore?

it will, just not automatic. BenQ has a software tool to do this so all programs will take the bitsetting.

I never thought to check if Nero offers this option when the drive was flashed with retail firmware.

I'm not using the 1620 at the moment. I went back to using my HP 420n (nec 2500a) for the moment.

hmm it's YOU again :cheesygri I guess after you set up your burner and cpu you'll be fine.

I did mention days ago to use windwflash.exe , I guess you chickened out? Seriously, it's a 50 dollar burner, just flash it already, it isnt like it'll bankrupt you in the unlikely event things screw up.

I posted a few days ago that my DW1620 would not burn my fake TY002 discs. Now, no one was able to help me out, so I researched it a bit and the problem was with the strategy that the burner used. Now my firmware writes the TY002s diffrently than previous firmwares. Therefore, since I sold my fake TYs and bought myself 200 pieces from NCIX, I rather use this firmware, as it works fairly good with the real TY002s.

AFAIK, G7V9 = B7V9. Only difference is one is for retail (B7V9) and one is for OEM (G7V9). same firmwares internally.

yup, just found it. But I flashed it to G7T9... :D So it works with my fake TY discs.

Actually, the GV version is missing the PIF scan ability and will scan very veyr slowly.

I assume flashing is NOT illegal,so can someone please post a link to a retail firmware. I am seeing the same crap as the first poster.

Post #2 on top. flashing from oem to retail kills your warranty. So they say anyways. Is anyone going to cry if that 50-60 dollar drive breaks and they refuse the rma because you crossflashed it?
