Help - Broken athlon 64

I was taking the heatsink off my s754 a64, and the cpu lid pulled off the rest of the processor. Should i send it in for a RMA, or is it safe to keep running it? (either with or w/o the lid) Please help!!!

i think you just pulled off the shin.... no worries it still works (in fact some ppl do this because they want the HSF to have direct contact with the core)

Yeah if it still works then it aint broke.. and if it aint broke, don't fix it.

so you think I can use the stock HSF directly on the CPU without any fear of crushing it? and theres still some left over thermal glue stuff on the core that I cant get off, am I safe just putting thermal compound over top of that? (i thought you werent supposed to mix) Any suggestions are appreciated. :confused:

Wow, the whole heatspreader came off? I don't think they'll accept a RMA if there's physical damage... you can definitely run it without the heatspreader - you'll actually get better heat disappation if you replace the goop with a good thermal compound.

nah, sound like you are new to hardware so i think you should put the core back on.

or you don't put heatsink directly and if broke, RMA, :)

Yeah.. wow.. misunderstood. That little metal piece at the top of the cpu actually came off?

Dunno how realiable it is without that.. how the heck did that come off? Sounds like a faulty chip on AMD's part as I can't really see thermal paste ripping that off.

Definitely call/email regarding getting an RMA for it.

How HARD DID YOU PULL? I know that the contact area between the A64 CPUs and HSF are really tight. To get mine off easily I always blowdryer it for 5 minutes then it comes off quickly because the thermal compound is heated up...

How hard did you force yours to get your IHS off? Sorry but thats a no no. Never force anything.

I dunno if your CPU is bunk right now, but never hurts to try it again.

I dont think RMA will take it (human error).

Once this guy brought in his computer saying he wanted to RMA his Intel P4 2.4GHz CPU. funny thing is that the Cpu was lying on the HSF....Guess what the problem was? He said he cleaned he cleaned his computer..

The CPU pins were broken, bent and what not. I mean WTF...How do you clean your computer for that to happen? We called Intel and they said NAH you wont get anything in return eventhough it was under warranty.

Like he said, if thats the case that the IHS is off, it will still work. Just dont expect it to work if you broke any pins, etc

It actually came off quite easily-i didnt pull much on anything...I actually think the IHS was coming loose before, because my temps were going crazy... I finally got the balls up to put this thing back in without the IHS, and I carefully put back my stock HSF - it makes solid contact with no modification. My temps are now a lot lower, and Im kinda glad the IHS came off... :D

Cool. You have much luck my friend! Good job. I wouldnt have guts to pry open my A64's IHS. Lucky for you, it fell off.
