Anyone here prefer listening to music with ear/headphones over speakers?

We all know how popular the MP3/music on the go hype is these days. Do any of you prefer earphones over home speakers? There are some benefits with ear/headphones, for a fraction of the cost you are able to get just as good sound as high end speakers with sub etc. Even the high end earbuds can produce generous bass, coming close to a home subwoofer. If you were to spend say good money on high end audio output, which would you put it to? Which is more useful?

i use HT speakers :)

if i use ear/headphones then i can't hear phone ring, parents calling, door bell, etc....

I usually use 1 earphone at a time, only at home, whenever I listen. Just in case doorbell, phone, someones calling me.
I don't have a formal mp3/cd player though.

I love using earphones cause you get more bass... but lately, i hooked up my Powerbook with my Altec Lansing speakers... and it sounds pretty decent. Better than the stock Powerbook speakers of course... nice deep base. Nothing to rave about... but better than what i can get out of the Shuffle..

Hehe ya i tried my buyddies shuffle, i think its ok, but the lack of bass control sucks, and the sound is just urgh flat. casuaul music listeners sure, but not for bassheads like me who like thier phat beats haha.

I use my logitech z2300 speakers as my main audio speakers, it shakes the house! and sold my home theatre a while ago since i barely watch movies. i have a spare tv in my room for watching, but i dont need anything hooked up to it, Since my brother has a high end HT upstairs i just use his, no point having 2 sets of all that expensive equipment lying around. Just keep what you need, and get rid of what you dont need and get the $. It feels good i tell ya.

why would i want to listen to music even if i have a pair of grado cans

- Radioshack Minimus 7 ($6 at garage sale... these are amazing little speakers.. the detail in the high frequency is amazing, though since they are small, low frequency extension is lacking.. i used these for about a year before i found the deal for the next item on the list...)
- Athena AS-B2 ($135, regular $300)
- Luxman CD player ($5 @ garage sale)
- FISHER turntable (free, borrowed from dad, he never uses it anyways)
- REGENT DVD-1000 DVD player ($39.97 from walmart... my TVs tiny, dont need a fancy DVD player)
- Vintage Kenwood integrated amp (free, borrowed from friend)
- Sonic Impact T-amp ($50; hopefully soon... i borrowed it form a member at head-fi, the little thing is DAMN AMAZING.. the clarity is just astounding...)

my headphones:
- Koss Portapros - $60
- Sony MDR-D66 Eggos - $40 (bought used from head-fi member)

ericssonboi: its very possible to build a decent 2ch audio system on a budget (im a 19 yr old university student), just gotta find the right deals... like the other day i saw the Athena ASB1's at futureshop going for $99 on clearance... amazing price, they retail for $230.

Yea... i understand you can find good deals... (i'm a 20yr old university student) but i've been spending my money on other things...
Once i have some money save up... i'll probably look into a home entertainment system.
I'd prefer to get something "nice" rather than just get something cheap (home theatre in a box) ... but i don't think that'll be anytime soon.
Until i get my own place... which won't be until a while... i'll hold off on it.
I might just buy some peice by peice.. (each Boxing day) :lol:

good point e-boi - so let me ask you this. if you were me, and takign my situation would u sell my logitech z2300 speakers that are reg $200 but got for $125 at a staples PM, they werent suppose to do it, so i got very lucky. im trying but i dont know if i could live without not being able to shake the house foundation

no way any headphone out there can ever match high end quality speakers with a powerful sub setup. The output just doesn't compare for me. The sub gives you the pounding feel on the lows. Sound system all the way for me.

good point e-boi - so let me ask you this. if you were me, and takign my situation would u sell my logitech z2300 speakers that are reg $200 but got for $125 at a staples PM, they werent suppose to do it, so i got very lucky. im trying but i dont know if i could live without not being able to shake the house foundation

My nephew has a pair of Z- 2300's and , and as you said, they provide 'monsterous' sound - even at 80% volume I couldn't hear a word he was saying - they're amazing speakers !

But...... If you feel like you might want to part with them , let me know with a PM , I'd be interested.

my TV is like, more than 15 years old, and it still looks great... its a toshiba... i think its a good size for my room as its pretty small :)

I say just keep your speakers.
It seems like you really love them... and since you got them for a good deal... why part with them?

Unless you really need the money... just keep them cause you love your music that way ;)

but ya im broke :( and i cant ask parents for $, their is no food in the house. barely any. im trying to tuff it out for longer, but its hard, though ive been doing it for 2 weeks now.

I listen to my Sennheiser HD497 headphones, they have much better sound than my Logitech speakers. :cheesygri

The computer is the central hub of my entertainment, so I didn't skimp on speakers when it came time to upgrade. I bought the Logitech z680 and it's great for listening to music and anything else you throw at it. I bought it because it's ideal for those who aren't exactly audiophiles but wanted something substantive; and the 5.1 output means I can watch movies and play games uncomprimised.

I also have headphones for those times when you can't thump the sub; a ritual I like to engage in from 12pm-10pm (2200). :D

Loaves of bread lasts a few days and its cheap .. :lol:
McDeals can get you some wheels... lol.. (i wouldn't suggest just eating McDonalds everyday, but that's just me)
Just watch your spending and try not to eat out as much.. (even fast food)

Hate to part with my music stuff ... even if its just the simple stuff... just a computer, standalone music player (shuffle), and some non oem earphones.
