I saw this in today's June 10 flyer and grabbed one last right just before closing .. seems like a great price for my light-duty small yard stuff. It is now charging, and waiting for the back yard test.

That's an awesome price! I have been looking around for several weeks at these for a birthday gift for my father....it's rare to find any cordless for under $70.
Unfortunately I ended up buying a regular priced one...but for those who need a trimmer this is a great deal!!!

That's an excellent price.
Hopefully battery life is not too bad, but it looks like the standard 12V cordless battery, so I can always use the one off my Drill as a backup.
Thanks

The unit comes with just one battery, but as graphx_guy points out, it looks like you might be able to interchange with another spare 12V battery. I will try to get ahold of another battery and try it.
It's still charging (the niCad needs 24hrs for the first charge) and if the weather holds until tomorrow, I will try it on the backyard, which may be small, but currently sports a 2.5 ft. forest of grass.
I'll report back with how it works.

Welcome to RFD! Great first post! I dont have much of an excuse to stay on my loud and highly polluting gas powered trimmer anymore :P

thanks to an rfd posting about a storewide sale a month or so ago i picked up a black and decker cordless for $49 from their outlet in pickering. it's reconditioned however it has a full 2 year warrantee. it works great plus the auto line feed and the edger feature are very handy. (i hate power cords + i've talked to several owners of gas models and decided cordless is the way to go.) btw i also picked up a b&d cordless hedge trimmer for only $29... again with a full 2 year warrantee!

so I wanted to test the weed eater today, now that it's fully charged, but of course it had to rain.
Looks like it will clear up later, though, so I'll go for it then and reply with results.

I tried the unit out on the overgrown yard of 2.5ft wet weeds and grass. (Which shouldn't be a fair test for a light duty unit) It held up OK, the motor didn't bog down too much under the heavy load.
After about 20 min. of continuous operation, the battery went out. I plugged it back in for the 3 hour charge, but since there's no light to indicate that the unit is charging, I didn't notice that the plug wasn't all the way in the socket.
A proper charge later had the trimmer back up and running. It requires little effort to operate; it is nice and light. I can comfortably trim & drink beer at the same time :cheesygri
So far, 35 bucks well spent.

I picked up one also for my new house. Don't forget that NiCds need about 2-3 full charge/discharge cycles before they are conditioned. Only then can you messure how long it will last. The first charge or two never hold very much juice so wait for a couple more charge/discharge cycles and then post your results.

are u sure 12v is going to be enough for you.
granted that is a good price. especially if you have other tools which you could interchange the batteries with.
CT has one that is 18v and comes with a bunch of interchangeable tools.
that one is 79.99 tho.
was always concerned about battery strength and longevity with these.

I wondered about that myself, but then I hacked some pretty thick bramble bush and 1/2 inch thistle trunk easily enough. So I figure that's powerful enough for my purposes. Seems to me cordless rechargeable is the natural solution for consumer trimmers.
But I am wondering if the battery really is interchangeable. I looks like it could be, but I don't have another 12V to try it. If anyone requests, I'll post a close-up digital shot of the battery.

CT has some combo sets for yard work, I think they have two lines, Black and DEcker and I think Yardworks. But they are interchangeable for other garden tools, like hedge clippers, leaf blowers etc.
About interchanging the B&D garden tool batteries with the power tool batteries, hmmm i don't know. I haven't purchased any B&D tools before.

It's made in China. Very good tool, I bought one last summer. So far, no complain.
Wireless! and the 12V batt is pretty standard.

Just picked up the grass trimmer and the hedge trimmer. Both use the same 12V battery of course. However, they are not interchangeable with the 12V battery for my Black and Decker Firestorm drill set.

I've ordered from CT online ever since they first offered the service.. and they used to be great. I was always amazed at how fast they filled my order and got it to my doorstep. Boy, have things changed! Last Friday I ordered the grass trimmer and a few other things to bring the total up to a hundred for the free tire pump, and finally received an email from them this morning, almost a week later, (It's Thursday) showing that my order had been shipped and listing all the items ....except for the grass trimmer!!!! NO notification or reason given, nothing! Upon calling them, they tell me it's out of stock.. " no frickin' wonder since it took ya a week to fill the order!!!!" Not only that, they had added another ten bucks to my credit card for the delivery of the grass trimmer if and when the thing ever makes it to their warehouse. No way, jose.... ain't gonna happen.
Talk about a radical change for CT online.. one of the first North American companies to start selling online.. and one of the best... to being one of the worst shopping experiences. I've got a B&M CT locally so I won't be bothering with CT anymore.

Yes, the brand name on the box is "Spectrum", which I believe is a generic name seen almost exclusively in Canadian Tire, much like 'Jobmate'.

bought it a few days ago but finally used it yesterday. It's definitely not as powerful as a gas or even a corded but if you're doing some light work it should be enough. One thing I didn't like was the battery life. It didn't last as long as I thought it would so ended up breaking out the gas one anyways.
Does anyone know if the unit takes standard refills for the plastic line? The one it comes with won't last too long.

WARRANTY
This product carries a 1-year warranty redeemable at any Canadian Tire store.
As far as the battery life goes I have only used it once so far to trim a 50' X 50' backyard and it is still going strong. As other posters have mentioned it is not for heavy duty cleanup but for trimming it is just fine.

Picked up one at Dufferin and Hwy 7 Can Tire yesterday, they still got tons of stock there.
Didn't try it out yet as it has to be charged 24 hrs before first use... probably can try it Sat morning.

For anyone thinking of spending 79 on a cordless i would suggest a gas one. I picked up a gas one for about $99 at home depot last year and it is excellent. It also came with a lawn edger attachment. It has so much power that you can edge the lawn in a couple minutes. It cuts right through the built up dirts on the sidewalk when edging.

work with the trimmer? There is potentially a faster charger too. The trimmer's battery doesn't last long enough for me. It would be nice to have two extra batteries / charger etc. for $30, if they are exchangable.
Thx,

I purchased one of these trimmers but returned it. I have what I would consider to be an average sized yard and the battery died half way through. I stuck it back on the charger for a couple of hours but it still didn't have enough juice to finish the yard.
I bought a Black and Decker cordless instead, cost about $110 but 18 volt battery, much better built and 2 year warranty, auto feed line and a spare spool of line included. Also came with a coupon for a free 12 volt leaf blower. So far, seems like a much better unit.
EDIT: I should also mention that this unit allows you to adjust the length of the shaft for taller or shorter people, and the cutting head rotates to make edging easier. It is this model (http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortments/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=140847439 6669576&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443280282&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474396670271&bmUID=1119575778831&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true) but was $110 in the store.
