A4Tech BatteryFREE Wireless Optical Mouse - $39.99.

Looks kinda neat! But I dont know how I would feel about having to lug around that mousepad too just for it to work. They gotta come out with a mouse that doesnt need any batteries or receiver to work.

I'm using a mouse made by that brand right now. Model SWOP-3. Very well built considering it was only $10 on sale. The wheel is as smooth and quiet as it gets (they advertise as such). But of course it's just a regular optical one, 800 dpi I think. Very comfortable to hold like original logitech mice. Only complaint is that the wheel shouldn't be so far back, because right now it's more suited for smaller hands, or should I say tiny hands as my palm rests too far back. :)

Edit: from the looks of it I don't think they fixed the wheel problem with this mouse either. So try before you buy!

interesting. but i guess it would stop working as soon as the mouse is lifted away from the given mousepad which gives it power... eh.

I think it is a joke ..... A *cordless* mouse requires to work on a *corded* mouse pad ....

No joke.

The mouse is cordless so you don't have to fight with the cord when using the device.

The mouse is battery-free so it's lighter and you don't have the trouble of replacing/recharging batteries.

AWESOME idea.

I think they are just playing around with the terms "Cordless" & "Freedom" ...

1. I can use my 'true' cordless mouse anywhere on my desk (or even a several feet away from the receiver). The 'mouse pad' area is many many times larger than this special mouse pad. This mouse offers "Restricted Freedom" at best.

2. Weight ... I think that's preference. I personally prefer heav(ier) mice but that's just me.

3. When I don't use it, I hide my cordless kb and mouse to free up my desk space for other work. With this thing, you will need to hide the mouse pad as well.

4. I don't see any extra programmable buttons ...

5. My MS cordless desktop lasts ~ 6 months on alkaline. It's not that inconvinient.

Ever consider is the the PAD that is detecting the motion and the mouse is just some "pointer". I bet you if you take the mouse off the pad, it stops working.

Like a Wacom tablet? :)

It takes like 20 seconds to change out some batteries. Have two sets and a charger and you've got no worries. I'd rather get a mouse with batteries than a crippled batteryless mouse.

If the mouse stops working once lifted from the mouse pad, then this is quite useless.
The main reason of having a cordless mouse is to not be binded to your computer. This corded mouse pad is still binding you to it.

Kind of stupid if you ask me.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. And how many people with wacom tablets use the mouse that comes with it? I for sure dont. It sucks being confined to a wired mousepad.

Yes, its light, but if you're confined to a small area and its not portable, you might as well go with a normal wired mouse!

Here is an ideal why not make a mouse with a roller ball and it charges the mouse when you move it.... Kidding, in theory it should work but now we are going from optical mouse back to a mouse with a roller ball. I hate dust in mouses!

I believe this mouse works just as a regular optical mouse. The power is transferred from the pad thru magnetic field. No contacts between them but it requires the mouse to be on the pad all the time to work ( 1mm above the surface is probably OK). If smarter, they would be incorporated a small rechargable back up battery inside.

Main reason I went wireless was that the cord drag annoyed me. That said, I've used my mouse from across the room a few times, but by far the biggest thing for me was the lack of a dragging cord. So technically this would work for me, but I'm happy with my old trusty Logitech combo.

Yup, I don't use that mouse that comes with Wacom.

- this is basically that technology I guess.

isn't the point of a wireless mouse so that you don't have so much wires cluttered on your desk with that wired mouse pad it just defeats all purpose for a wireless mouse, I would rather use a corded mouse than that...

a4tech makes a wireless mouse that comes with 4 AA NiMH batteries, with a charger built into the receiver. 2 batteries in the mouse, 2 charging in the receiver so you always have batteries on hand. I think Superstore sells it for around $40.
