Digital Picture questions - low resolution?

I had a so called professional photographer aboard a Princess Cruise ship last month take our wedding pictures for us. It was all done digitally with a 5 meg Nikon Camera. I bought the CD negatives.

When I get home, I notice the pictures were only ~1.1 meg in size each. The resolution is 2000x1312.
This is fine for printing at 4x6 or 8x10, but it is not printable for anything larger like 11x14.

Is this acceptable (the resolution)? For them money I paid them, I would have thought they would be higher then this. Should I complain?

You may want to complain, but unless they explicitly stated something about the resolution of the images you were to receive, you probably have no legal right to even demand a refund.

That's a shame, though - you'd think a pro would know better.

Did you sign a contract/agreement with the pro? There might be a clause in there that clients don't get the highest res picture. Similar to a lot of pros don't give the films back to the clients if they shot films (some do, not all)

that's a 2.6 mp picture. I'm surprised that they're using only a 5mp digital. Something like this should of been discussed before hand but they should give you higher res ones or print larger ones for you...but really if it's not in writting, there isn't too much you can do but complain.

You should've worked it out beforehand. The camera probably wasn't set to maximum resolution to save space.

Thanks for the replies.. i guess you should never trust a professional photographer. Should have yelled at her when i noticed her changing CF cards every few miniutes because she was using 64 meg cards.

These are the settings for our pictures. Kind of hard to believe a professional photographer uses such low settings on their cameras. I could have got a friend to do a better job!
